Importance of Modelon Gmbh for Dassault Systèmes Systems Engineering Portfolio

In the last few years, PLM vendors have focused on developing their software portfolio to address the growth in the internet of things (IoT) and to address the smarter products challenge that broadly fall in the multidisciplinary product development domain encompassed under mechatronics, systems engineering, etc. Dassault Systèmes has been working on creating a strong foundational expertise in these areas and it continues to advance its portfolio to address the complex engineering issues. Some of the important acquisitions of Dassault Systèmes in this domain include Dynasim in 2006 and a strong integration of Dymola in CATIA. Dymola is a modeling and simulation solution based on open Modelica modeling language that was developed by Dynasim AB.  In 2010, Dassault Systèmes acquired Geensoft, that specialized in modeling, simulation and development of industrial plant automation and electronic embedded systems.

Recently, Dassault Systèmes made an announcement about the acquisition of Modelon Gmbh. The details of this acquisition is as follows:

 * Modelon AB, the parent company of Modelon Gmbh, remains completely independent from Dassault Systèmes.

  *   Before this transaction, Modelon AB owned 45 percent of Modelon GmbH and the rest (55 percent) was owned by the local CEO, Johannes Gerl.

   *   All of Modelon GmbH, which was mostly a services company, has been sold to Dassault Systèmes.

 * Almost all of the intellectual property associated with the Modelon brand still remains under the ownership of  Modelon brand. Only one out of 15 Modelica libraries that had been developed by Modelon GmbH, have been sold to Dassault Systèmes as part of this transaction.

Modelon is a developer of model-based systems engineering solutions that are built on open standards. Modelon develops as well as supports Modelica and FMI open standards and communities. Briefly put, Modelon delivers model-based systems engineering (MBSE) services, specializing in multi-domain system simulations from concept to sales and furthering into maintenance of products in many different industries.

Dassault Systèmes has been a strategic partner of Modelon AB for model-based systems engineering solutions as related to collaborative product design and experience. Dassault Systèmes will continue to be a Modelica content partner. On the other hand Modelon will continue to be a distributor of  Dassault Systèmes products such as Dymola, ContorlBuild, Simulia Isight etc.

Acquisition of Modelon GmbH will help Dassault Systèmes to further enhance its capabilities in modeling operations, simulation and test as related to mechatronics (a combination of mechanical, electronics and software). This acquisition is important as the future of product development is based around solving the challenges posed by complex and smart products that incorporate multi-engineering domain expertise, as is expected in the future of automotive with self-driving cars and even in AEC (architecture-engineering and construction) with smart homes and cities. The partnership in the past between Modelon and Dassault Systèmes has proven to help the development of BMW’s i3 and i8 cars — new-generation electric and hybrid vehicles. Further, Modelon GmbH's has been successful in other industries as well such as aerospace, energy, process and utilities, and construction that Dassault Systèmes will directly benefit with this acquisition.
