Who is SOLIDWORKS Simulation’s Target Audience?

Shawn Wasserman: Hi. I'm Shawn Wasserman, simulation editor at ENGINEERING.com. I'm here with Delphine Genouvrier at SOLIDWORKS World 2015.

So, could you tell me a little bit about simulation in SOLIDWORKS?

Delphine Genouvrier: So SOLIDWORKS offers a wide range of simulation applications inside the SOLIDWORKS Desktop, as we call it now. We offer structural analysis, fluid flow analysis, plastic injection simulation, and motion simulation, all fully-embedded inside SOLIDWORKS.

SOLIDWORKS simulation is really targeting product engineers. So they can use the technology of simulation during the concept phase, and the detailing design phase. And the goal is really to get technical insight while you design your product, and to have these insights to make a decision. So you can use different types of applications: FEA, CFD and plastic analyses for that purpose.

Then, in companies when you have specialists and analysts, they might want to do crash tests or non-linear analyses that are pretty sophisticated. Then Dassault Systemès offers Abaqus inside SIMULIA that really fits the needs of these people.

Shawn Wasserman: Perfect, and they're all accessible in the 3DEXPERIENCE, correct?

Delphine Genouvrier: Yes, that's something new as well, because SOLIDWORKS Simulation is our current generation, I would say, offered inside SOLIDWORKS. But Dassault Systemès, as you know well, they are working on that 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

And so now, for our SOLIDWORKS user, we have a complementary solution called SOLIDWORKS Conceptual Design. The goal is, really, from very concept phase to be able to design a mechanism to design your product. And with that product, we have simulation embedded, of course, and that's coming from the Abaqus technology.

So you have the Abaqus backbone behind it, and you have this 3DEXPERIENCE platform, whic is offering usability and intuitiveness that a product engineer needs.

Shawn Wasserman: So, could you tell us a little bit about the advancements in SOLIDWORKS 2016 that's coming up, that were announced here?

Delphine Genouvrier: Sure. So, you've seen the What's New? We started to present the new features that are coming in next release.

So, the first one is the ability to section the mesh. To explain simply, when you do structural analysis, you measure your model, and you get the results. And sometimes, it can be very convenient to understand how the mesh looks inside your model.

So, for example, when you have parts in contact, your mesh should be fine enough to get the proper behavior. And so, we created a very nice tool to be able to section the mesh within SOLIDWORKS and be able to navigate inside the mesh within the model.
