Whether you’re a recent graduate or an experienced engineer, there is a certain way of going about finding your dream career. The video above is the first in a four-part series on methods you can use to find your dream job.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked with hundreds of engineers to help them advance their careers and, in many cases, they struggle to find work they actually enjoy doing.

So the question that needs to be answered is, how do we find the jobs we love to do, and the employers who will pay us to do what we love?

The underlying problem behind this question is that many of us don’t know what it is that we love to do. My solution to this is what I call the “reverse-engineering approach to finding your dream engineering career.”

In this four-part video series, we’re going to learn about the following:

  • Exploration: How to Identify Your Wants in a Dream Career

In this step, we’ll use tools like ENGINEERING.com to find out what interests you and what related job opportunities are available.

  • The 5x5x5 Research Method: How to Reverse Engineer Job Openings to Match Your Interests

In this step, we’ll explore five disciplines, five job openings and the top five skills that are required to get a full understanding for the market. We’ll learn about in-depth skills research to find what skills interest us most and where we can go to obtain these skills. We’ll use ENGINEERING.com again, along with Eng-Tips.com Engineering Forums for this step.

  • Authority Research: Using Others Networks to Your Advantage

In this step, we’ll learn how to find the right people to learn from and how to use their networks to your advantage. You’ll also learn how to uncover the right keywords for job discovery.

  • Company Research: Performing Recon on Employers Before the Interview

In this final step, we’ll learn how to perform advanced recon on employers to learn as much about them as we can before the interview takes place.

Watch the video above as we jump into the Exploration step of finding your dream career and touch upon the 5x5x5 Research Method.

Continue your search for your dream engineering career and watch Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of this video series.
