The device is easy to carry, weighing only 60 grams, and can be attached to helmets, hats and bags or mounted on walls, doors, etc. The Graava can record for up to three hours on a single charge at HD 1080p, 30 fps or 720p, 60 fps.
Videos recorded with the device can be automatically edited and formatted for upload to social media accounts, such as Vine or Instagram, which accept six-second and 15-second videos respectively.
The camera’s AI knows what moments are best for sharing, thanks to a heart rate monitor, accelerometer, GPS and microphone.
Graava’s AI, consisting of smart hardware and software algorithms running in the cloud, uses these sensors to isolate the most exciting parts of your video.
“Driving on an empty road for half an hour is not interesting. Jumping out of a chair lift and riding downhill is . . . Graava knows,” reads Graava’s website. “After returning from a day recording video outdoors, you use the app on your smart phone to tell Graava what you want to do with it. Then you drop the camera on the charger . . . Graava will detect that it has power, activate Wi-Fi connectivity and automatically synchronize and edit the video for you. You get a notification when the clip is available and ready to share.”
Dropping the Graava camera on its wireless charging mat sends footage to the cloud. From there, additional media, like music, can be selected and automatically edited into a video. Multiple recordings from a number of Graava cameras can be synced for use in a single video as well.
The way the Graava camera edits a video makes it almost exclusively useful for the more physically active amateur videographers. But these are also the type of people who may not want to spend as much time behind their computers, prepping their latest wipeout video compilation.
“Millions of videos are shot every day, but very few people actually have the time, experience or software necessary to edit the hours of footage they have after a long day skiing or zip lining,” said Graava CEO Bruno Gregory. “Graava is here to take care of that for you. We make creating awesome videos easier than ever, and it’s going to completely change the way people share experiences.”
Design engineers at Matter are on the job to guide the Graava team in the development of the camera, from start to finish.
When asked to clarify specifics on how the Graava camera’s AI worked, Chris Papasadero, Matter’s managing director, explained, “This is Graava’s secret sauce!” Got to love a mystery.
Further engineering details are currently undisclosable. “We have quite a bit of engineering work in the pipeline at the moment that we can't talk about,” Papasadero told ENGINEERING.com.
Graava is currently taking preorders and is expected to ship in early 2016.
