NYU’s Engineering Masters Programs Win Award for Online Education Pedagogy

NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering team celebrates online education award for their online masters and continuing education programs.

New York University Tandon School of Engineering (NYU Tandon) has been awarded for its online engineering programs. These online programs offer engineering professionals certificates and master’s degrees in more than a dozen fields, including bioinformatics, cybersecurity, electrical engineering and organizational behavior.

Based on some impressive statistics, the Ralph E. Gomory Award for Quality Online Education was given to NYU Tandon by the Online Learning Consortium (OLC). Some of NYU Tandon’s impressive online education accomplishments include:

  • 96 percent course completion rate
  • 89 percent graduate degree completion rate
    • Note: National average STEM master’s program completion rate is 66 percent according to the National Council of Graduate Schools
  • 95 percent online faculty retention
  • 75 percent growth in online programs over 10 years
  • 130 online courses
  • 10 new online courses per year
  • 10,000 enrollments in 10 years
  • 20 percent enrollment increase year after year
  • Average 15 hours of course work per week on each course

Much of what NYU Tandon offers its students seems common enough on paper to many other online education programs:

  • 24/7 access to content from around the world
  • Content modules with interactive learning sessions
  • Real-time webinars with live Q&A
  • Video sharing, screen-sharing, live chats, and student polls, VOIP

There aren’t many programs that can compare to NYU Tandon’s statistics, such as a 100 percent job placement within six months of graduation. Additionally, of those enrolled while employed, 40 percent saw a promotion or raise within six months.

Though much of NYU’s offerings seem standard on paper, it is noted that it wasn’t as much what was offered but how it was offered that contributed to NYU Tandom’s success. “The Online Learning Consortium awards acknowledge creative and effective approaches to advancing online education,” said Catheryn Cheal, chair of the OLC Nominations and Elections Committee. “The 2015 recipients represent extraordinary examples of the exciting innovation happening in online learning today, and we congratulate them on their successes.”

NYU Tandon Dean Katepalli Sreenivasan agreed with Cheal. Sreenivasan said, “Our virtual classrooms are among the best and most rigorous in the world. They provide our online students from across the nation and around the world with the same content, taught by the same noted professors as on campus. It is enormously gratifying to see the program’s dedicated faculty and staff honored by the nation’s premier organization in virtual education.”

Sreenivasan has more cause for his praise. Back in 2011, OLC awarded NYU Tandon’s cyber security program the best online program in any field in the United States. Additionally, US News & World Report ranked the school’s online graduate program in the top 12 for the past three years.
