Share PTC Mathcad on Browsers and Mobile Devices

Mathcad users can now share and access their calculations via any internet connection thanks to the Mathcad Gateway solution.

The Gateway will give users the ability to share the calculations on their company server with customers, without risking their Intellectual property (IP). To protect IP, the creator of the calculation can limit the user’s ability to see the methodologies and algorithms behind the customized tool.

“PTC Mathcad Gateway will allow us to share important steps in our design best practice with customers, without exposing our critical calculation information,” said Garry Morgan, a structural engineer at Kingspan Limited. “The ability to access these calculations via a browser will help our customers choose the right product based upon their specific requirements.”

Brent Edwards, senior director at PTC Mathcad added, “This release delivers a solution that allows companies to share vital engineering calculations and design intent across the business, but with greater confidence that valuable IP is protected and used consistently. We give users the ability to access calculations anywhere, anytime from a wide variety of devices using a secure math server that offers a universal, single point of access.”

Many might think that the Gateway sounds very “cloudy," given that users can share and access their calculations over the web from anywhere. However, the first iteration of the Gateway will only be available through a customer’s internal infrastructure.

“Most potential customer conversations we've had so far indicate that the security of having the server behind their own firewall is a big draw,” said Andrew McGough, product manager for PTC Mathcad. “However, a cloud based, hosted version has many benefits and is certainly something we'll be discussing for a future release.”

In that sense, the release sounds similar to COMSOL’s app server, where simulation experts can create simulation apps and share them to customers and other stakeholders. “In the case of Mathcad, any calculation, however simple or complex, can be represented in worksheet form, so how flexible and extensive the 'app library' can be for Gateway is up to the user,” said McGough.

The PTC Mathcad Gateway will offer features such as:

  • IP Protection to prevent unauthorized access or distribution
  • Universal access to have full access to the calculation over various devices
  • Certified calculation hub to standardize approved calculations
