Cisco’s New IoT Service Platform Costs $1.4 Billion

With Cisco’s recent announcement that it intends to purchase Jasper Technologies for $1.4 billion, the tech giant is looking to close the loop on much of its Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio.

The IoT platform offered by Jasper is used by engineers to launch, manage, monetize and automate IoT services on a global scale.

To connect your IoT device to Jasper’s Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, the device is first connected to the Internet through cellular networks. The platform can then perform device management, data management connectivity, security and real-time insight services.

This purchase will have Cisco jumping into the IoT management software space with interoperability between an ecosystem of devices, IoT service providers and application developers. Cisco’s plans for the company include new IoT services such as enterprise class Wi-Fi connections. improved security for connected devices, and advanced analytics capability to better manage IoT devices.

“I am excited about the opportunity for Cisco and Jasper to accelerate how customers recognize the value of the Internet of Things,” said Chuck Robbins, Cisco chief executive officer. “Together, we can enable service providers, enterprises and the broader ecosystem to connect, automate, manage and analyze billions of connected things, across any network, creating new revenue streams and opportunities.”

“IoT has become a business imperative across the globe. Enterprises in every industry need integrated solutions that give them complete visibility and control over their connected services, while also being simple to implement, manage and scale,” said Jahangir Mohammed, Jasper chief executive officer. “By coming together, Jasper and Cisco will help mobile operators and enterprises accelerate their IoT success.”

Cisco’s $1.4 billion purchase of Jasper might seem like a large sum of money. This is especially true when a lot of criticism befell PTC for its $750 million investment in various IoT management software technologies. In comparison to Cisco, PTC’s piecemeal IoT purchases look like a bargain.

However, keep in mind that it was estimated that the IoT machine-to-machine (M2M) market was worth $15 billion in 2012 and will be worth $200 billion by 2017. With predictions of revenue of such a scale, many technology giants will pay a pretty penny to get a piece of the IoT management software pie. Cisco and PTC will not be the last.
