Build Earth Live Competition: Hyperloop Edition

Elon Musk’s Hyperloop concept has been the subject of a few competitions lately, but there’s one coming up that the AEC industry is going to want to know about.

The eighth annual Build Earth Live competition, an international team-based competition for building information modeling (BIM), has issued a challenge: to design a plan for a Hyperloop between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Challenge

Competitors in the Build Earth Live competition will have a 48-hour window in which to collaborate on their Hyperloop designs.

“This eighth edition of the Build Earth Live series is a return to the Middle East, following the success of Build Qatar Live in 2012,” said Nathan Doughty, COO of Asite, the organizer of the event.

“We will be focusing on the infrastructure challenges around one of the most exciting innovations of our time in transportation technology: the Hyperloop concept,” Doughty continued.

Specifically, teams will be developing plans for two terminal stations, one in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi, which will need to integrate with these global cities.

The Contest

The Build Earth Live competition is an annual contest for the AEC industry put on by solution provider Asite. The mission of the contest is to promote cloud-based processes, international developments in interoperability and public access to design processes.

“We’ve decided to use the concept of the Hyperloop to connect two Emirati cities, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as a fitting demonstration of what it is possible for people working far apart geographically to achieve together,” said Tony Ryan, CEO of Asite.

Registered teams in the contest will be free to use any interoperable technology of their choosing and will be encouraged to keep a public collaboration site to allow observers and visitors to experience the process.

“The competition serves as an important reminder that openBIM is a powerful way to connect people for collaborative work,” commented Jeremy Powell, director of product marketing at Vectorworks, the headlining sponsor for the competition.

The contest will take place from 12 noon GMT on May 23, 2016, until 12 noon GMT on May 25, 2016. Winners will receive recognition as leaders in their fields and in collaborative technologies.
