PTC's IoT Platform ThingWorx Now Compatible with Third-Party Clouds

PTC has just announced that their Internet of Things (IoT) platform, ThingWorx, is now compatible with third-party cloud offerings.

Previously, ThingWorx users have been able to link their IoT platform to PTC’s internal cloud. However, by adding third-party compatibility, users will now be able to access a variety of services offered by these other organizations.

ThingWorx will now be compatible cloud offerings from Amazon Web Services (AWS) IoT and Microsoft Azure IoT Hub.

“The cloud is becoming increasingly important to the growth of enterprise IoT, and IT architects need to consider which IoT cloud platform offerings will serve as a foundation for IoT initiatives today and in the future,” said Vernon Turner, senior vice president, IDC.

“PTC is taking a significant step by integrating ThingWorx with many of the leading IoT cloud platforms. This not only increases the openness of ThingWorx as a platform, but it better allows PTC customers to identify and implement the appropriate components across cloud platforms to further their IoT initiatives,” Turner continued.

Engineers Benefit from IoT Platforms with Multiple Cloud Options

Engineers designing for the IoT need to use cloud technology to capture and analyze the Big Data collected by their products. This can create challenges, since often this data may be collected and processed on multiple cloud systems. ThingWorx will now be able to link these cloud services together for both IoT and non-IoT applications.

As the link to these third-party cloud offerings is pre-built into the ThingWorx IoT platform, engineers can develop these tools faster. Traditionally these connections were done with API’s and communication protocols which have little consolidation.

Naturally, if an engineer needs to connect to a third-party cloud that isn’t pre-built into ThingWorx, these traditional communication connection techniques will still be useful. However, the cloud options that are pre-built into the system will speed up development for the majority of teams.

An added benefit to these cloud connections is that engineers will be able to mix and match the best components of each cloud service. This will help them to optimize their IoT tools for the task at hand.

“Our open IoT platform strategy is driven by our customers’ need to grow and scale their IoT projects,” said Jim Heppelmann, PTC president and CEO. “By working closely with IoT cloud leaders, we can unlock unprecedented value from the IoT, which will further enhance our customers’ products and offerings.”
