Engineering IoT Experts Can Now Become ThingWorx Certified

PTC University has just announced their role-based ThingWorx Certification program. This certification program is for Internet of Things (IoT) engineers, developers and architects who can demonstrate their competence and sought-after IoT skills. The focus of the program is on app development, device integration and model development using the ThingWorx IoT platform.

Currently, PTC University offers a ThingWorx Developer Associate Exam which ensures a candidate’s ability to model an application using the “Thing Templates” and “Things Modules” tools.

The candidates are also tested on using ThingWorx Composer to fashion a user interface, edit entities in the application and perform other standard IoT development tasks.

The ThingWorx Developer Associate Exam is a prerequisite for all the other IoT exams that will be offered by PTC University. These exams include:

  • Device Integration professional exam releases (launches this month)
  • Application UI Developer professional level exam (in development)
  • Application Model Developer professional level exam (in development)

“PTC believes companies that create, build, and service smart, connected things are looking for people who have proven expertise using ThingWorx technology,” said Stefan Helf, PTC University senior vice president. “We are excited about the ThingWorx Certification Program because it enables individuals to develop differentiated skills and helps build a well-trained ThingWorx user community.”

PTC is using these exams to build a workforce with proven skills in the IoT sector and PTC’s IoT platform technology. The purpose of this is similar to other certification programs offered by software vendors such as the Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) or Certified SOLIDWORKS Expert (CSWE) exams.

The vendor is able to prove their thought leadership in the field, release a team of innovative workers trained in their software into the workforce and increase the employability of engineers. This is a significant win-win. However, PTC ThingWorx certification will only be valid for two years, so engineers will need to recertify if they wish to keep their status.

Those looking to take a PTC Certification exam will have to be proctored by Kyterion either online or at one of their global testing centers. To train for the exam, PTC recommends their online training platform or taking an instructor class from PTC University. Successful candidates will receive a digital badge which they can use to prove to employers and colleagues their abilities with the IoT platform.
