Samsung recently announced the SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud, an IoT platform that aims to increase interoperability between devices and applications. This will be no small task in the current world of disparate information silos and an abundance of communication protocols.
With a plethora of options for IoT platform providers, it can be difficult for users to determine a good fit. With IBM reporting that 90% of information currently obtained on the IoT goes unused, it’s increasingly important to find a solution that effectively manages this information.
Features for Developers, Interoperability, and Security
SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud incorporates the family of ARTIK IoT modules. The IoT platform uses open APIs for data query, data visualization tools and a scalable cloud architecture. The ARTIK Cloud will allow developers to collect and utilize data securely from any connected device or cloud service.
Many of ARTIK Cloud’s key features revolve around easy device and data interoperability. These include:
- Device manifests to easily add devices using a universal language
- Multiple protocol support including REST/HTTP, Websockets, MQTT, and CoAP
- The ability to collect data from any third-party device or cloud
- Secure two-way communication between device and cloud
- Fast access to data and statistics with multiple backends for storing and indexing data
ARTIK Cloud also features a number of developer tools to enable quicker workflows and better implementation of IoT applications and services:
- Easy-to-use, open APIs for data collection and querying
- Support for many mobile and platform SDKs including Objective C/iOS, Java/Android, JavaScript, Swift, PHP, Python, Ruby, Scala, C# and Tizen 3.0
- A built-in rules engine for triggering cross-device actions and alerts
- Powerful visualization tools for viewing data from different devices in context
- A developer portal with API documentation, samples, blogs and forums
- Built-in REST APIs for managing and extending platform entities
Lastly, a number of security features allow for data protection and privacy:
- Devices can be connected to the cloud using TLS, secure element, and certificates from a trusted certificate authority
- All device, app and user interactions are secured with authentication and authorization based on open Internet standards
- Built-in identity and permissions management
What Samsung is Bringing to the IoT Table
Samsung is no stranger to pushing for interoperability. The company’s previous SmartThings IoT platform is a member of the Z-Wave Alliance of industry leaders collaborating on a standard of communication across different brands. ARTIK Cloud is another step towards this goal and Samsung CEO BK Yoon believes ARTIK Cloud fills a hole in the current difficult-to-navigate market of IoT platforms.
“As more and more consumer IoT devices are created and brought to market, the need for interoperability becomes paramount as it is the key to creating more compelling and integrated experiences,” said Yoon. “The need for an open cloud solution that can work with any connected device and with other cloud services is critical for broader consumer adoption.”
