What Ericsson’s IoT Platform Offers Engineers

With all the buzz around the release of Ericsson’s IoT Accelerator, engineers might be wondering what this new Internet of Things (IoT) platform can offer their designs and industrial processes.

In a nutshell, the IoT Accelerator is a software-as-a-service (SAAS) that simplifies the development, deployment and monetization of new IoT designs. This IoT platform is targeting engineers who are designing IoT solutions in the public safety, utilities, transportation and smart city sectors.

“The main challenges that we have seen in the areas of IoT are, for one, the complexity. Designing, implementing and operating an end-to-end solution for a device, bringing data into analytics, and presenting results in an application environment requires a lot of integration,” said Olle Isaksson, head of strategy, industry and society at Ericsson.

“Secondly,” he added, “the ability to actually share and work in a joint ecosystem, and share the financial results of the final solution, does not exist today.”

“Thirdly, the challenge of deploying an innovative solution in a production IT environment often leads to longer time to market than expected,” Isaksson stated.

The IoT Accelerator platform is designed to address all of these issues.  Key performance functionalities include:

  • Data management
  • Data analytics
  • Device management
  • Connectivity services
  • Billing

The platform will also include expansion modules that will allow engineers to access a developer environment, a software development kit (SDK) and a self-service portal.

IoT Accelerator will operate on Ericsson’s cloud and will be able to support hybrid cloud systems. This will help to meet the data security requirements of clients hoping to use an in-house or legacy cloud system.

Ericsson reports that the new IoT platform is compatible with all of the main connectivity standards. Additional compatibility will include:

  • Ericsson's cellular network
  • NB-IoT
  • LTE Cat-M1
  • EC-GSM-IoT (low power, wide area applications)

IoT Accelerator will also be able to link with Ericsson’s portfolio of services, which includes tools for systems integration, application development, industry/transportation services and business consulting.
