HP Launches IoT Platform to Streamline Heterogeneous Devices and Data Management

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has just released its HPE Universal IoT Platform at Internet of Things World 2016. The platform aims to help engineers develop the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure as the industry continues to expand.

The HPE Universal IoT Platform will attempt to create its infrastructure by simplifying the communication between diverse IoT products, protocols, clouds and control systems.

“The HPE Universal IoT Platform dramatically simplifies integrating diverse devices with different communications protocols, enabling customers to realize tremendous benefits from their IoT data,” said Nigel Upton, director and general manager of IoT at HPE. “[It] is designed to scale to billions of transactions. [It is also] tried and tested in rigorous large-scale Global Telco and Enterprise environments in a variety of smart ecosystems.”

In other words, the IoT platform is intended to be vendor-agnostic and operate on the oneM2M industry standard. As a result, this single IoT cloud platform is designed to manage heterogeneous sensors, machine-to-machine (M2M) devices, gateways, processes, analytics, data and monetization.

“The value of the IoT lies in enriching data collected from devices with analytics and exposing it to applications that enable organizations to derive business value,” said Upton.

The HPE Universal IoT Platform is compatible with a number of connectivity protocols including:

Long range, low power (LoRa)
SIGFOX
Cellular
Radio
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth

“From multiple back office IT systems and diverse connectivity technologies to business processes, the biggest barrier encountered by enterprises deploying IoT across multiple countries is complexity,” said Jim Morrish, chief research officer at Machina Research. “The most important thing a supplier can provide enterprises is simplicity—Hewlett Packard Enterprise certainly helps with reducing the complexity, pulling together components of an end-to-end enterprise IoT offering.”

Some additional capabilities of the HPE Universal IoT Platform include:

Connecting multiple networks and collecting the data into one model
Standard device management over various IoT gateways, devices and networks
Gaining better insights using mashups of internal and external data
Data analytics to discover patterns and business insights via HPE Vertica and HPE Haven OnDemand
An application developer portal
Data security using key exchanges and codec libraries
