THIS WEEK IN PRODUCTION TECH: Shoulder Milling, Quick Change Modules and More

MaxiMill 491 Shoulder Milling System from CERATIZIT

This year, Cutting Solutions by CERATIZIT will be presenting an extended product portfolio with its brand new shoulder milling system, the MaxiMill 491.

The new MaxiMill 491 offers a start programme for a variety of applications and precision inserts with eight usable cutting edges producing profiles of exactly 90°. The milling system is suitable for universal application, including shoulder milling, face milling, peripheral milling, slot milling and trochoidal slot milling.

CERATIZIT will be exhibiting the MaxiMill 491 at booth number 34 at the Metal Show in Bucharest, Romania from June 1 to 4.

VERO-S NSE Mini Pneumatic Quick-Change Module from SCHUNK

For the production of small precision components, such as in the medical or mold making industry, SCHUNK has expanded its line of modules for efficient workpiece clamping.

With a height of only 20 mm, the VERO-S NSE mini pneumatic quick-change module is extremely thin, making it ideal for retrofitting existing machines to achieve greater utilization of the machine area and direct clamping of small workpieces.

A patented dual stroke actuation concept ensures higher clamping performance of the module. With a module diameter of 90 mm and a clamping pin diameter of 20 mm, the standard integrated turbo function of the NSE mini achieves significant pull-in forces of up to 1,500 N.

The clamping pin is positioned by short tapers and retained by three clamping slides. Locking is achieved mechanically by means of a spring assembly. It is self-locking and designed for form-fit clamping. Large contact areas between the clamping slides and the pins minimize the surface compression in clamped state, reducing wear on the modules.

Because the minimum distance between two clamping pins is only 100 mm, the NSE mini can be used to achieve very small and variable borehole gauges for workpiece or pallet clamping. This enables unprecedented flexibility in the area of quick-change pallet systems. To maximize the life span and process reliability, NSE mini – like all VERO-S modules is equipped with all functional parts such as the base body, clamping pins and clamping slide, all of which are made of stainless steel.

In addition, the low-maintenance, fully sealed modules are protected against chips, dust and coolant. The machining of small parts becomes especially efficient with fully automatic loading of the machining center. For this purpose, the base plate of the VERO-S NSE mini can be provided with a hole for an air purge connection under the clamping pin opening. The air purge prevents chips from becoming lodged in the module during workpiece changing by a gantry or robot. The clamping slide position can also be monitored.

HA78 series Power Inductors from TT Electronics

TT Electronics, a provider of engineered electronics for performance critical applications, launched the HA78 series of power inductors aimed at LED driver and braking control system applications in the automotive market.

The inductors are ideal for high power density applications where size is critical and particularly where high-efficiency DC-DC converters are using high switching frequencies to 3Mhz as well as EMI and low pass DC filters.

Bearing the automotive industry AEC-Q200 certification, the HA78 series inductors are available in a range of inductance and current rating to meet the needs of any relevant application. Inductance ratings from 1.4 µH to 1800 µH, and current ratings up to 10A are available.

Reliability was a key factor in the design of the HA78 inductors that feature an operating temperature range of -40 to +125 C (-40 to 257 F) and a maximum temperature rise of 40 C from an 85 C (104 to 185 F) ambient environment.

Able to withstand shock and vibration conditions, the inductors are mechanically robust and designed for long life expectancy. Magnetically shielded and RoHS compliant, the HA78 series inductors feature low resistance values.

The TT Electronics HA78 inductors will find favour with automotive electronic design engineers in specific applications such as LED driver, powertrain, engine and transmission control, as well as with design engineers operating in the general industrial area for use in DC/DC converters and automation applications.

Insert Additions for t515 from Tungaloy Corporation

Tungaloy Corporation recently announce the expansion for T515, a CVD grade for cast iron turning. The items included in the expansion are positive inserts, large-sized inserts, and wiper inserts.

T515 grade, with cemented carbide substrate and coating, is highly versatile and ideal for cast iron turning. With enhanced adhesion between the substrate and the coating, T515 delivers strong resistance to chipping and flaking, thus offering more stable machining. By thickening the alumina (Al2O3) layer by 1.7 times, Tungaloy has succeeded in drastically improving wear resistance in high-speed machining and realized astoundingly long tool life.

PremiumTec, Tungaloy’s original surface treatment technology, improves surface smoothness of the coating for greater resistance to chipping and built-up edge.

The addition of positive and large-sized inserts now covers an even wider range of applications in cast iron turning.  The wiper inserts cover high feed applications, improving customers’ productivity and reducing their production cost.

Main features include:

  • Enhanced adhesion between the cemented carbide substrate and the coating drastically increases resistance to chipping and flaking.
  • Thicker alumina layer helps strengthen wear resistance in high-speed machining.
  • PremiumTec improves the surface smoothness of the coating, significantly increasing resistance to chipping and built-up edge.
  • 59 items added in total
