Exocam Powered by ModuleWorks Launched at LMT Lab Day 2016 in Chicago

The move to digital dentistry has been slow but steady over the last decade. With the adoption of tools like handheld intraoral scanners, powerful computing software and industrial 3D printers like Objet Eden 260VS, the turnaround time for diagnosing, cleaning, preparing and delivering crowns has been dramatically reduced. Although more and more dentists are adopting technologies like 3D printers, most are still using computer numerical control (CNC) machines for making crowns. The linchpin of both the 3D printer and CNC machine workflows is engineering software.

At LMT Lab Day 2016, held in Chicago, German-based ModuleWorks launched “exocam powered by ModuleWorks.” To understand what exocam powered by ModuleWorks is, you need to know that the company already has a dental CAM-engine called ModuleWorks Dental Framework.

Dental Framework has an integrated kernel used for toolpath calculations, which translates these calculations and outputs corresponding NC files. This kernel provides high-performance 3-axis and 5-axis CAM features for enhanced machining strategies in dental milling and grinding applications. According to the press release, “exocam powered by ModuleWorks” combines the exocad nesting module with the easy-to-use ModuleWorks Dental Framework.” This is significant, because the ModuleWorks Dental Framework already has some great features for dental machining.
You can load into the program CAD files designed in exocad (i.e., dentalCAD files) or other CAD software (stereolithography .stl files). The combination of CAM-engine and verified machining templates will, hopefully, speed up production in milling operations and dental labs worldwide.

Dental Framework has built-in .xml scripts that contain machining templates for implementation, and a toolset library for manufacturing a wide spectrum of dental indications

Targeted to dental CNC machine resellers, “exocam powered by ModuleWorks” is intended for dental CNC machine resellers and manufacturers; the first sales were made at LMT Lab Day in Chicago.
Yavuz Murtezaoglu, managing director of ModuleWorks, said, “ModuleWorks Dental Framework in the exocad environment enables resellers and OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] to offer a complete and cost-effective dental CNC solution.”
