New Competition for Engineering Makers and Shakers

The newest contest for the makers and shakers of the engineering world is now open for submissions.

Joining the ranks of similar contests, the IEEE recently announced their inaugural Maker Project Competition

The contest provides a new opportunity for engineers with a maker bent to develop tech-based solutions and battle it out for monetary prizes and the chance to work with an IEEE member to further enhance their project.

The competition is open, global and inclusive, inviting engineers, makers and innovators worldwide to participate and show off their technological prowess.

“This contest is about the developer and tinkerer in all of us, ready to step on the world stage to show off their engineering talents and hands-on creativity,” says Tom Coughlin, a senior member of IEEE and chair of the Public Visibility Committee. “This competition embodies the very spirit of making, and lays the foundation for the next generation of maker talent.”

The contest is open for submissions through mid-September of this year.  Entries must be an engineering project that was built or created using hardware or software. Submissions should also include an image or video and a description of the tech project.

Entries will be posted on the IEEE Maker Project website, for perusal by other entrants or the general public.

Judging will be based on three criteria: originality, innovation and benefit to humanity. These are broad goals, which is typical for contests like this one.

The grand prize winner’s project will be spotlighted on the IEEE Transmitter website and the creator will also receive a $500 Amazon gift card.  They will also receive a video mentoring session with Tom Coughlin, who will help the winner take their project to the next level.

Categories that makers can design for include:

  • Accessibility
  • Education
  • Entertainment
  • Health and Safety
  • Sustainability
  • Transportation

But the official judges aren’t the only ones who get to offer an opinion on all the cool tech that is sure to come out of this contest.  Submissions on the site are available for the general public, who can vote on their favorites.  So even if you aren’t entering the contest yourself, get involved with your fellow engineers by voting for and sharing your favorite projects!
