The student edition has a user interface (UI) based on the professional HyperWorks Desktop. As a result, visualizations, modeling, pre- and post-processing and managing results or test data will have a similar look and feel to the industry level software.
Learning the platform using a similar UI should help budding engineers learn the ropes of computer aided engineering (CAE) and simulation software and carry their skills forward into a professional positon.

Some of the HyperWorks CAE and simulation tools that have been made available to students in this student platform include:
- Modeling
- Linear and nonlinear analyses
- Structural and system-level optimization
- Fluid and multi-body dynamics simulation
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
- Antenna placement
- Multiphysics simulations
- Model-based development (MBD)
- Data management
The new release will also introduce students to new features and functionality from HyperWorks 14.0. Some of these improvements include:
- FEKO electromagnetic simulations for antenna design and electromagnetic compatibility
- OptiStruct’s new nonlinear analysis, contacts, and optimization algorithms
- 3D rigid-to-rigid contacts and co-simulation features for MotionSolve
- Larger model limits of up to 100,000 nodes for finite element analysis (FEA)
“The addition of FEKO, Altair's electromagnetic solution, will enable students to now tackle tasks in electromagnetic field simulation directly within HyperWorks,” said Goelke. “Its several solution methods with true hybridization will help students to receive efficient results for a wide range of problems. I'm also extremely happy about the extension of model limitation to 100,000 nodes for finite element solvers, since it will offer students more freedom to really work with the software.”
The free software can be downloaded onto any laptop or PC from any location. The license is valid for one year, and is compatible with various CAD formats and HyperWorks Solver data.
