THIS WEEK IN PRODUCTION TECH: Isolation Valves, Magnetic Drills and More

PTFW Media Isolation Valves from Clippard

Clippard has launched NIV series PTFW media isolation valves. The Clippard NIV Series Media Isolation Valve is a solenoid-operated device that uses a flexible diaphragm to isolate the actuation mechanism from the fluid path.

All wetted areas of the valve are PTFE, making this series ideal for use with corrosive media. A unique feature of the NIV Series is the one-piece valve stem that functions as a sealing membrane while also supporting and centralizing the poppet in the seating area. This multifunctional poppet/diaphragm/stem results in a simplified design with fewer parts (only two for the 2-way and three for the 3-way), longer life and zero dead volume. Choose from four orifice sizes available as 2-way normally-closed, 2-way normally-open, or 3-way selector/diverter.

Industries and applications that commonly use these types of valves to isolate gas or liquid include: drug dispensing, laboratory equipment, analytical, chemical analysis, sampling, life science/biotech, genetic research, gas chromatography, spectrometry, DNA synthesizing, blood analyzing, printing, diagnostic equipment, fermentation, water treatment and more.

Key features include

  • Low power consumption
  • Compact, lightweight design
  • Bidirectional
  • Zero dead volume
  • All wetted areas PTFE
  • Ideal for use with corrosive media
  • High cycle life
  • Fast response time
  • CE, RoHS Compliant
  • Proudly made in the USA
  • ISO 9001:2008

Heavy-Duty Magnetic Drill from CS Unitec, Inc.

CS Unitec’s MABasic 450 professional-grade, 2-speed portable magnetic drill cuts holes up to 1-5/8” diameter with annular cutters in structural steel and other metals.

This heavy-duty workhorse has a 10.5 Amp/110 V double-insulated motor and a no-load speed of 250 and 450 RPM. With the included 3/4” geared chuck, this model easily converts to a standard drill press with a 6-1/3” stroke for conventional twist drilling up to 3/4” diameter.

Compact (14-1/4” tall) and lightweight (29 lbs.), the MABasic 450 is easily portable to the jobsite, making it the ideal hole-cutting solution for steel fabricators and contractors, as well as for plant maintenance operations.

The MABasic 450 is equipped with an internal lubrication system that increases the life of annular cutters by reducing friction and wear. The Electronic Safety Shutoff Sensor automatically shuts down the drill if the magnet loses contact with the material, protecting both operator and equipment. The machine’s magnet has a holding strength of 3,080 lbs.

PremiumPlus+ ECPM Motors v600 RPM from NovaTorque

NovaTorque, Inc. has introduced 600 RPM versions of its PremiumPlus+ Electronically Commutated Permanent Magnet (ECPM) Motors.

The 600 RPM versions are currently available from 0.75 HP to 3 HP, with 5 HP and 7.5 HP models coming soon. These versions are suited for directly driving larger diameter fans at low speeds, and are designed to eliminate the costs, maintenance, and efficiency losses associated with belts and pulleys.

The 600 RPM motor is energy efficient – reducing motor losses (wasted energy) by as much as 50 percent. Overall energy usage is reduced by four percent to 20 percent, depending on operating speeds, with the largest percentage savings at partial rated speed. Additionally, these models have significantly lower current requirements (FLA) than AC induction motor alternatives.

NovaTorque’s patented geometry allows for the use of ferrite (versus rare earth) magnets. NovaTorque motors are produced in standard NEMA frame sizes for easy substitution.

PiezoWalk Motor Technology from Physik Instrumente

Physik Instrumente’s new N-565 compact, nanometer-precision linear stages are designed for high-end applications in bio-nanotechnology, fiber-optics, microscopy, semiconductor testing, and metrology and scientific research in beamlines and laser labs.

Due to the fully integrated linear piezo motor, the low-profile stages have a very small footprint with a width of only 65 mm and length from 80 mm. Travel ranges 1/2”, 1” and 2” are offered in 13, 26 or 52 mm.

An integrated interferometric linear encoder developed by PI can resolve to 20 pm and allows incremental motion below one nanometer. Due to the short signal period of 0.5 µm, the linearity error of PIOne encoders is less than one percent.

The PiezoWalk technology combines the technological advantages of piezo class resolution with long travel ranges: they offer subnanometer resolution, high forces, and high stiffness.

In contrast to conventional long-travel piezo-motor principles, PiezoWalk stepping drives are not subject to sliding friction effects and virtually wear free motion is achieved, because the “legs” lift off for each step.

Preloading the actuators against the runner ensures a self-clamping force even when powered down and the piezo stepping drive holds a position mechanically stable without servo jitter and energy consumption.  PiezoWalk motors were developed for the semiconductor industry over a decade ago and provide extreme reliability.

With crossed roller bearings, the point contact in ball bearings is replaced by a line contact of the hardened rollers. Consequently, they are considerably stiffer and need less preload, which reduces friction and allows smoother running. Crossed roller bearings are also distinguished by high guiding accuracy and load capacity. Roller creep is prevented by active cage assist.

The PiezoWalk drive is designed to run on a maximum voltage of 45 V. Several controller options are available: stand alone, OEM card, rack mount, and multi-axis controllers with coordinate transformation for parallel-kinematics applications. For start-up and system configuration, the PIMikroMove GUI is included, as well as LabView drivers and DLLs.

IGEXH Inductive Sensors from EGE

Sensor manufacturer EGE has introduced IGEXH series of inductive sensors for high-temperature applications in zone 0 hazardous gas atmospheres and zone 20 dust atmospheres.

Designed to withstand extreme ambient temperatures from -20 °C to +140 °C, IGEXH sensors operate reliably even with frequent temperature variations.

The rugged proximity switches manufactured from 1.4571 stainless steel and PEEK provide IP68/IP69K ingress protection. The companion signal processing unit, the IKM 122 Ex amplifier, is installed outside the hazardous area. At launch, the series features M12 and M18 type sensors, with more to follow at a later time. The sensors are connected via a 2 meter FEP cable.
