Samsung Electronics recently announced its plans to acquire the public and private cloud provider Joyent. While Joyent will continue to operate as an independent company, Samsung hopes to soon be able to take advantage of Joyent’s cloud technology to further its own Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud-based initiatives.

Samsung and Joyent Joining Forces to Improve IoT and Cloud Solutions

Though the acquisition is yet to be finalized, both companies can expect to benefit from the partnership. Joyent offers several cloud solutions, including Node.js production support, containers as a service and scalable object storage. On the other hand, Samsung’s brand, capital and global scale offer Joyent plenty of room to grow.

“We are excited to join the Samsung family,” said Joyent CEO Scott Hammond. “Samsung brings us the scale we need to grow our cloud and software business… and a partner for innovation in the emerging and fast-growing areas of mobile and IoT, including smart homes and connected cars.”

Samsung Has Its Head in the Cloud

This acquisition is the latest move by Samsung in what appears to be a hard push for cloud technology. Just last month, the company announced the Samsung ARTIK Cloud, an IoT platform aimed at increasing device interoperability. Even more recently, Samsung announced its funding of IoT startup Afero, a similar cloud-based IoT platform.

David Eun, president of Samsung’s Global Innovation Center, offers an explanation for the strategy. “We work closely with startups to bring new software and services into Samsung, and one of the ways we do this is by driving strategic acquisitions.”

Another possible motivation for Samsung is its interest in increasing IoT interoperability, a goal that is only attainable through company cooperation. In this case, Samsung is removing the need for competition while still allowing Joyent to further develop its own technology.

“Joyent is a great example of a leading and disruptive technology company that will make unique contributions to Samsung while benefiting from Samsung’s global scale and reach,” Eun continued.
