THIS WEEK IN PRODUCTION TECH: Linear Actuators, Toolholders and More

3-Phase Radiation Tolerant Motor Drive from Data Device Corp.

Data Device Corp. has recently introduced a 3-phase radiation tolerant motor drive, providing 100k Rad Total Dose protection and advanced circuit and logic protection.

The PW-82336 3-phase motor drive hybrid utilizes a MOSFET output stage with 100 VDC rating to deliver 5A continuous current (10A peak current) to the motor, along with flexible I/O, enabling a common design to be used across multiple applications.

Features:

  • Flexible I/O allows common design to be used across multiple application platforms with individual bridge returns and standard logic level inputs to facilitate design implementation
  • Eliminates shoot-through conditions with high and low-side input logic signals XOR’s in each phase to prevent simultaneous turn on of in-line transistors
  • Internal logic controls (from +5 to +15 V ) for the high and low-side gate drivers for each phase
  • Constant output performance for switching frequencies from DC to 50kHz provided by the internal charge pump circuitry
  • 100VDC rating with 5A continuous, 10A peak current capability
  • 100k Rad Total Dose (Si)
  • Small size: 66 x 35.6 x 6.35 mm (2.6 x 1.4 x 0.25 in)

ERD Series Stainless Steel Linear Actuators from Kollmorgen

Kollmorgen has announced the ERD series stainless steel linear actuators combine the AKMH series servo motors with ball-screw driven transmissions as IP69K-rated packages that are ready-to-install in food, produce or pharmaceutical machinery and other high-hygiene applications.

Designed for use with Kollmorgen AKD or AKD-N series centralized and decentralized servo drives, the ERD actuators use single-cable technology – a single cable for power and feedback. A choice of encoder feedback includes digital resolver SFD3 and Hiperface DSL.

The 316 stainless steel housed AKMH series servo motor has a torque derating of under 20 percent.

Aimed at precision positioning tasks such as lifting units, closing or feed axes, or for machine format adjustments, the actuators are available with inline or reverse (parallel) motor mount configurations.

A choice of four AKMH servo motors (72.5 to 132 mm diameter), allows the ERD a thrust force of up to 20 kN with feed speeds to over 1 m/sec over a stroke length of up to 600 mm. For compact installation the actuator screw section diameter ranges from 42 to 132 mm across the four frame-sizes.

For installation flexibility, a choice of mounting versions include foot, flange, trunnion and clevis pin, with the actuator rod supplied with internal or external threads and an optional support bracket. A pressure compensation feature prevents condensation from forming inside the motor.

Heason Technology provides full support for Kollmorgen’s ERD series actuators and its full line of motion components and systems with a GOLD Partnership agreement within the global manufacturer’s Premier Partner program.

TENDO-Tech Toolholders from SCHUNK

The TENDO-Tech is a line of special toolholders offered as standard from SCHUNK.

These toolholders have technical features incorporated into the toolholder and are manufactured from the same high grade tool steel as their Platinum line.

The TENDO-ES is extremely short and rigid and the tool shank is clamped inside the machine spindle taper. It is ideal for low clearance situations and is a good combination with the SVL extension, which is quick and easy to change.

The TENDO-TURN is easy to change in turret mounted and CNC lathe applications. It is besy for thru coolant drills and has added vibration dampening.

The TENDO-RLA offers easy and accurate tool length presetting. The TENDO-ZERO is the toolholder to use for control of run-out for reaming and precision drilling.

All of the TENDO-TECH line offer direct clamping diameters for the best precision, have a run-out of 0.003 mm or less, have superior vibration dampening and are repairable. They are available in CAT 40 and CAT 50 tapers and are sleeveable for added flexibility.

AC8025P Grade from Sumitomo

Sumitomo’s new AC8025P Grade for steel turning achieves higher productivity and a longer tool life for significantly reduced machining costs.

Featuring Sumitomo’s own Absotech Platinum CVD Coating, combined with a newly developed tough carbide substrate, the AC8025P provides exceptional cutting edge chipping resistance and adhesion resistance.

Significant improvements to the coating adhesion strength control residual stress and provide more than twice the chipping resistance as compared to conventional coatings, while maintaining wear resistance.

A smooth surface treatment greatly improves adhesion resistance along the ridgeline of the cutting edge. When machining low-carbon steel, rolled steel and other materials prone to adhesion, where problems such as peeling or chipping of the coating layer at the cutting edge, deterioration of the surface finish and reduced tool life may occur, the AC8025P increases tool life stability. Greater edge sharpness greatly reduces chattering.

The AC8025P grade is suitable for a wide variety of steel turning applications, including continuous cutting, light interrupted cutting and interrupted cutting.

NexFET 60-V N-Channel Power MOSFET from Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments recently introduced a new 60-V N-channel FemtoFET power transistor that provides the industry's lowest resistance that is 90 percent below traditional 60-V load switches, reducing power loss in end-systems.

The CSD18541F5 is offered in a tiny 1.53-mm-by-0.77-mm silicon-based package that has an 80 percent smaller footprint than load switches in SOT-23 packages.

The CSD18541F5 metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) maintains a typical on-resistance (Rdson) of 54-mΩ and is designed and optimized to replace standard small-signal MOSFETs in space-constrained industrial load-switch applications. The tiny land grid array (LGA) package features a 0.5-mm pitch between pads for easy mounting.

The CSD18541F5 expands TI's NexFET technology portfolio of FemtoFET MOSFETs to include higher voltages and manufacturing-friendly footprints.
