THIS WEEK IN PRODUCTION TECH: Chuck Jaws, O-Rings, Insert Grades and More

Air Chuck Jaws from Dillon Manufacturing

Dillon Chuck Jaws has recently announced a new line Air Chuck Jaws including both Style M and Style R – such as those often machined using air chucks.

CNC machined for accuracy, the pins serve as a locator and allow precise repeatability plus fast installation. Available as blank top jaws in 1018 steel or 6061 aluminum or pie shaped jaws using A360 or 6061 aluminum, plus 1018 steel, they are ideal for all types of air chucks including Kitagawa Northfield and Microcentric brands.

While Air Chuck Jaws may appear the same, there are significant performance differences due to manufactures' selected standards, and the manufacturing process used to achieve them. Dillon chuck jaws offer an attractive alternative to expensive OEM jaws and their associated slow deliveries.

O-Rings, Quad-Rings and Quad Rubber Balls from Minnesota Rubber and Plastics

Minnesota Rubber and Plastics now offers a large inventory of standard size molded Quad Brand family of products including Quad O-Rings, Quad-Rings and Quad Rubber Balls for sealing in a wide range of industry applications. These high quality sealing products are available in select sizes in small to large quantities for 48-hour lead time global delivery.

Quad-Ring Seals serve as a general purpose seal for use as static, reciprocal and oscillating seals in low speed and low pressure applications and are available in 12 different materials in outside diameter sizes from 0.070 inch (±0.003) to 0.139 inch (±0.004).

Quad-Ring seals have twice the sealing surface to withstand distortion and extrusion while providing longer life compared to O-Ring seals. Quad-Ring seals reduce friction and eliminate leakage with strategically placed parting lines. Also available in 12 different materials in outside sizes from 0.070 inch (±0.003) to 0.139 inch (±0.004).

Designed for pneumatic, hydraulic and water applications, Quad Rubber Balls are molded of 70 Shore A nitrile compound specially formulated for precision grinding the ball surface. High speed centerless grinding combined with automatic gauging/measuring assures consistent, close tolerances of both spherical and diametric dimensions. A precise, uniform finish ensures consistent sealing regardless of how the ball seats in the application.

Molded of 525K elastomer, these Quad-Brand balls are available in 14 diameters from 3/32 inch (0.093 ±0.003 dia., 0.003 sph) to 1 inch (1.000 ±0.004 dia., 0.005 sph).

Duratomic TK Insert Grades from Seco Tools

Seco’s new TK1501 and TK0501 insert grades, with the latest Duratomic coating technology, have a wider application range and an overall increase in tool life and productivity.

Seco’s Duratomic process manipulates aluminum and oxygen at the atomic level to create insert coatings with greater toughness and abrasion resistance. Their balance of toughness and hardness meets the highest performance demands consistently and reliably.

TK1501 and TK0501 integrate Seco’s EDGE INTELLIGENCE concept that combines extensive high-performance insert experience and knowledge in every cutting edge for every application requirement. Chrome Used-Edge Detection makes it easy to tell if an insert’s cutting edges have made contact with a workpiece. The inserts are optimized to provide the highest possible contrast to make it easy to instantly identify when an edge has been used, even in low-light environments. TK1501 and TK0501 grades’ Chrome Used-Edge Detection contributes to a potential 30 percent decrease in waste due to prematurely discarded inserts.

The inserts’ ability to increase productivity through higher speeds and feed rates reduces lead times as well as run-in and setup times. This results in a decreased chance of encountering production bottle necks on a shop’s turning machines.

The new grades are available in a comprehensive selection of geometries—from roughing to finishing—to give you a desirable surface finish in any application.

ROTA TB2 Pneumatic Power Chuck from SCHUNK

The SCHUNK ROTA TB2 pneumatic self-contained power chuck has many features to fully utilize the productivity potentials of modern machining centers.

Despite the compact outer dimensions, the ROTA TB2 has a large through-hole of up to 560 mm.

With an air pressure of 6 bar it is possible to achieve high clamping forces of up to 280 kN. The base jaw guidance is equipped with a special seal to prevent penetration of contamination, which helps reduce maintenance costs.

The design of the base jaws have been optimized for minimal loss of centrifugal force even at high rotational speeds. An advanced lubrication system ensures constant clamping forces and an optional integrated pressure sensor provides for maximum process reliability.

To increase the cycle rate in the machining of pipes and rods, the ROTA TB2 features a double acting check valve with extra large channel bores, which speeds up the clamping process. After completion of machining, the quick action ventilation system releases the clamping set-up.

The TB2 is available in sizes from 470 mm to 1,000 mm with bore diameters from 185 mm to 560 mm.

M2131 Sky-tec Ramping Cutter from Walter

The new M2131 Sky·tec Ramping Cutter from Walter brings new, higher levels of process reliability to the machining of non-ferrous metals such as the aluminum wrought alloys or aluminum lithium alloys often used in aircraft structural components.

The cutter allows shorter machining time due to its high metal removal rate and delivers long tool life thanks to the low build-up on the cutting edge.

The new M2131 boasts protection against centrifugal force at the insert contact surface, which helps ensure the tool’s high level of process reliability even at maximum speeds and its V-shaped cutting edge for ramping promotes rough milling and semi-finishing of pockets with high chip volume.

This 90° shoulder milling cutter with ramping capability has a maximum cutting depth of 0.59 in. or 0.78 in. (15 or 20 mm), a diameter range of 0.98 in.—3.14 in. (25–80 mm) and a high level of radial runout accuracy.

The M2131, with integral cooling for MQL or emulsion, has a finely balanced basic body, with different interfaces such as HSK, ScrewFit, cylindrical shank or shell mill mount. It has two sizes of indexable inserts with various corner radii and employs the new milling grade WNN15, known for its extremely long tool life.
