New Add-On Combines 3D Scanning and CAD for Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering has never been straightforward. Typically, the workflow has been to scan or trace physical objects in one software, then output that data to a CAD application through an intermediate file type. 

However, a new add-on for ANSYS SpaceClaim promises to streamline that workflow. ReverseEngineering.com has recently released a HIPP 2016 add-on for ANSYS SpaceClaim and SpaceClaim Direct Modeler. Now, users can leverage the add-on and bring the scanned data directly into ANSYS SpaceClaim.

The stand-alone version of HIPP 2016 has already developed support for a wide variety of 3D scanners. These include FARO HD scan arms, Romer Absolute SI scan arms, Kreon Baces, MicroScribe HDI LMI blue and white light scanners. Utilizing the HIPP 2016 add-in, data from all of these sources can be directly brought into ANSYS SpaceClaim.

Users who are hard-probing features will be able to live-track the probe on screen to measure planes, points, lines, splines, circles and section profiles in the SpaceClaim environment. HIPP 2016 offers a probe compensation for measured diameters. Users will also find that the Digitize by Time and Distance settings will give them more control of the captured data. Using the live Spray Mesh feature will create a ready-to-wrap mesh surface in SpaceClaim as the data appears in real time.

This add-on holds the potential to lower software costs dramatically by reducing the need for additional third-party 3D scan-design-print workflow applications.  

The newest version of ANSYS SpaceClaim offers a series of enhancements that pertain to reverse engineering. The ability to go directly from scan to modeling without the need to jump between applications will streamline the reverse engineering process for SpaceClaim users.
