THIS WEEK IN AUTOMATION: Ethernet Switches, Proximity Sensors, and More

Industrial Gigabit Managed Ethernet Switch from Antaira Technologies

Antaira Technologies has recently announced its expansion in their industrial networking infrastructure family with the LNX-2012GN-SFP series.

Antaira’s new LNX-2012GN-SFP industrial gigabit managed Ethernet switch series has been designed to fulfill applications in harsh or outdoor environments. This unit has one of the highest density SFP fiber port counts in the market for a DIN-Rail unit.

The extensive SFP fiber connectivity of this unit is ideal for centralized connection of multiple devices, especially in environments with a lot of electrical noise where SFP fiber is immune to such issues.

Some applications where the LNX-2012GN-SFP switch works well includes: power/utility, factory/process control automation, windmills, mining infrastructures and ITS - roadway traffic control/monitoring applications.

Antaira Technologies’ LNX-2012GN-SFP series is a 20-port industrial gigabit managed Ethernet switch line that supports a 12~48VDC power input range. Each unit is designed with eight 10/100/1000Tx Fast Ethernet RJ45 ports and twelve 100/1000 dual rate SFP slots for fiber.

With a 40 Gigabit backplane speed, the LNX-2012GN-SFP supports jumbo frames and wide bandwidth for large Ethernet data packet transmissions. These switches are also made with high density port counts for edge-level connectivity solutions.

The LNX-2012GN-SFP product series provides high EFT, surge (2,000VDC) and ESD (6,000VDC) protection. These units are built to have a dual power input design with reverse polarity protection, and there is also a built-in relay warning function to alert maintainers when any ports break or power failures occur. This makes it ideal for applications requiring high reliability and distance extension.

This product series is pre-loaded with “Layer 2” network management software that supports an ease of use Web Console or Telnet through the serial console by CLI configuration. This high density managed switch line provides the ring network redundancy function with STP/RSTP/MSTP and the Super Ring redundancy protocol which supports a <30ms network recovery time, eliminating the compatibility issue for any existing network concerns.

In addition, the built-in SNMP, VLAN, IGMP, QoS features support network planners to increase data transmission performance within the network.

The LNX-2012GN-SFP series is backed by a five-year warranty and the units are IP30 rated, compact, fanless, DIN-Rail and wall mountable. Each series is built to withstand industrial networking hazards like shock, drop, vibration, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and extreme temperatures. There are two operating temperature version models for either standard temperature (-10 to 70° C / 14 to 158° F) or extended temperature (-40 to 75° C / -40 to 167° F). The models have the dimensions of 96.4mm (W) x 105.5mm (D) x 154mm (H) and a unit weight of 2.7 pounds.

Modular Sort System from Dematic

Dematic, a global supplier of integrated automated technology, software and services to optimize the supply chain, has introduced the Modular Sort System, a scan and sort system for production and distribution applications.

This solution is engineered to provide sorting performance to many applications: sort-to-pallet build, shipping doors, shipping containers or workstations.

Built around pre-engineered and pre-configured modules, the Modular Sort System fits into new or existing buildings and is designed to support the carton, case and tote handling environment. Positive sortation assures that the correct container is directed to the correct location and in the correct sequence.

Most commonly used for final disposition in the shipping area, the sort sub-system can be configured for other applications such as: routing-to-pick modules, value-added processing, quality assurance and packing stations. Typical shipping configurations include manual palletizing (one or more pallets per divert lane), direct divert into a shipping container (gaylord) or connection to an extendable conveyor for fluid loading into a trailer.

The Modular Sort System is a solution that automates the scan and sort function.

Dematic iQ software manages induction, gapping and sorting while providing real-time performance information. The pre-engineered layout includes accumulation and gapping conveyor, scanner, software and a choice of diverters: right angle transfer, horizontal belt, or steerable wheel. The layout is configured for the required number of divert points.

Divert lanes are arranged to support carton flow into a shipping container, manual palletizing or fluid loading directly into a trailer. The conveyor portion of the Modular Sort System connects all of the divert points in the layout.

Custom, Lightweight EOAT from FIPA Inc.

FIPA Inc., a manufacturer of advanced vacuum technology, gripper systems, air nippers, tube lifters, and End-of-Arm-Tooling (EOAT), recently created a custom EOAT that complements and enhances the performance of an advanced robotic automation system.

Designed for FANUC America Corporation, a global supplier of innovative robotics, CNC systems, and other factory automation solutions for industries spanning automotive and metal fabrication to food and pharmaceuticals, FIPA’s 15-pound EOAT solution extends the range of parts that their robots can handle, and helps maximize efficiency.

Built in FIPA’s American facilities, and installed in the testing and demonstration laboratory at FANUC headquarters in Rochester Hills, Michigan, this latest custom EOAT solution features four flat vacuum cups especially designed for the dynamic handling of oily metal sheets, a heavy-duty ejector for the highest possible process reliability, a carbon fiber frame that provides a superior strength-to-weight ratio, and partially black anodized aluminum components for improved wear-resistance and ease of maintenance.

The SM-F Series flat vacuum cups employed in the FANUC EOAT enable the process-secure and slip-free handling of oily metal sheets in a variety of automotive, metal processing, and mechanical and plant engineering applications, and are especially well suited for use in auto body and vehicle construction.

Featuring a robust design that combines large area, multi-part, anti-slip cleats with large anti-slip supporting ribs, SM-F Series vacuum cups provide a high degree of slip resistance, effectively absorb the high lateral forces that result from maneuvers like tipping metal sheets, and prevent the deep-drawing or deformation of thin metal sheets, which is critical in applications like auto body manufacturing.

Made of silicone-free NBR materials with a hardness of 60° Shore A, the flat, round vacuum cups feature a soft, flexible sealing lip that delivers a perfect seal on both flat and slightly curved products to minimize leaking, and a vulcanized aluminum connection thread (available in several different options) that guarantees a tight fit, even in highly dynamic gripping cycles.

The heavy-duty ejector employed in the FANUC EOAT (item number 65.120) delivers high-reliability vacuum generation in harsh environments — including the automotive manufacturing, building material, timber, and packaging industries — and is ideal for use in applications that handle light- to medium-weight workpieces.

FIPA’s heavy-duty ejectors accurately compensate for compressed air fluctuations between 3 bar (43.5psi) and 6 bar (87psi) to provide greater process reliability, and feature a compact and robust rectangular aluminum housing that enables the space-saving parallel block assembly of multiple ejectors in both centralized and decentralized vacuum systems.

FIPA’s heavy-duty ejectors are also available with auxiliary inputs for blow-off, which enable rapid product release for extremely short depositing times; auxiliary inputs for connecting a vacuum switch, which enable process monitoring; and silencers for noise-optimized operations.

The series is available in units weighing between 0.1lb (48g) and 0.5lb (225g), and with suction power spanning 30Nl/min to 130Nl/min.
