The global need for engineering managers has increased dramatically in recent years. Between new industry needs and retiring engineering professionals, there will be more engineering management job openings than there will be qualified engineers to fill them.

With all these opportunities, engineers will need the right education to move forward into management roles in their company, field or industry.

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) offers this education in the form of its newly launched online Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) degree program.

“The Master of Science in Engineering Management is an interdisciplinary online degree designed to develop the management, engineering and problem solving skills required for the technical, financial and organizational requirements of engineering projects,” said Mark Smith, Interim Assistant Director of Academic Programs at CSULB.

The program teaches engineers the essential technical, business, managerial and communications skills and tools that will make them successful engineering managers in the future.

The breadth of information CSULB’s MSEM degree offers comes from the collaboration among three vibrant colleges: CSULB’s College of Engineering, College of Business Administration and College of Continuing and Professional Education.

Pursue Your Education While Working Thanks to Online Courses

The MSEM at CSULB is offered entirely online. This makes it attractive to working engineering professionals who don’t have the time or proximity to commute to a campus in order to attend classes.

The online structure is designed to accommodate working professionals who seek advanced training that will enhance their career prospects but who do not want to leave or jeopardize their existing employment and career progress.

Students joining the program should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology, and though there are no specific coursework prerequisites, students who performed reasonably well in mathematics and statistics courses are more likely to succeed in this program.

The program covers a blend of engineering-specific leadership and management expertise, which is applicable across any engineering discipline, including new and emerging disciplines such as nanotechnology engineering.

Students are admitted to the program in a cohort each fall and take the courses sequentially. The degree can be completed in less than two years; students must complete 30 credit hours through 10 courses, taking two courses per semester for five semesters.  Students also choose an area of concentration from Civil, Mechanical or Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

The curriculum is designed to satisfy current and future industry needs, and has been adapted to the online learning environment to offer student-centered learning, community interaction, project-based assessments, synchronous office hours and discussion forums.

CSULB also offers its online students strong support through its Academic Technology Services (ATS), which works to enhance student access to technology-based education.  ATS support services include desktop support and system administration, web and application development and classroom support.
