Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. was on hand at the recent Flash Memory Summit (FMS) to showcase its latest memory and storage solutions. Toshiba leveraged FMS as a stage to highlight itsBiCS FLASH 64-layer, 256Gb 3D flash memory - and to debut an all-flash solution for big data analytics.

Toshiba's Shigeo (Jeff) Ohshima, technology executive, SSD, and Yoichiro Tanaka, senior fellow, jointly presented a keynote session titled: " New 3D Flash Technologies Offer Both Low Cost and Low Power Solutions ." Emphasis was placed on the data-intensive tasks such as real-time analytics, computational genomics, cloud computing, and video and image processing that are driving the need for high-density, low-cost solutions.

Additionally, Toshiba showcased its new BG series solid state drive (SSD) family . Toshiba's new single-package ball grid array (BGA) NVMe PCI Express (PCIe) Gen3 x2 SSD features BiCS FLASH deploying 3-bit-per-cell (TLC) technology, utilizing an in-house Toshiba-developed controller and firmware for a vertically developed solution.

FMS marked the debut of Toshiba's new big data analytic platform technology: Flashmatrix. This platform features integrated compute, storage and network elements optimized for high performance, suitable for hybrid cloud architectures and edge-based applications that require highly distributed analytic capabilities.

The recently launched OCZ RD400 NVM Express M.2 SSD Series was also be demoed at the Toshiba booth, running live in an ORIGIN PC MILLENNIUM desktop. ORIGIN PC is currently leveraging the performance of RD400 1024GB SSDs in several system configurations to provide storage capacity for custom gaming and professional PC builds.

RS Components Adds New Logic Controllers to RS Pro Range

RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc , has extended its portfolio of own-brand products with the RS Pro range of logic controllers, offering basic control for applications such as packaging machines, light control, home automation and filling systems.

The RS Pro range consists of four controllers in variants with 12/24V DC and 110/240V AC both with and without an integrated display. Two associated expansion modules are also available, which provide the control unit with additional I/Os (eight inputs and four outputs) and two companion RS485 communication modules that allow communication with external devices such as HMIs, as well as being suitable for integration into existing systems.

The range also includes a logic module USB programming cable that supports the upload of programs from a PC and a memory module that allows the easy cloning of programs on to other RS Pro controllers without a PC. RS also provides graphical programming software available as a free download.

Netlist Unveils HybriDIMM Storage Class Memory Product With Key Industry Partners, Including Samsung

Netlist, Inc. announced the first public demonstration of its HybriDIMM Storage Class Memory (SCM) product at this year’s Flash Memory Summit. Using an industry standard DDR4 LRDIMM interface, HybriDIMM is the first SCM product to operate in current Intel® x86 servers without BIOS and hardware changes, as a unified DRAM-NAND solution that scales memory to terabyte storage capacities and nanosecond memory speeds.

HybriDIMM's architecture combines an on-DIMM co-processor with Netlist's PreSight predictive software-defined data management to unify memory and storage at near-DRAM speeds.

Technical Summary of DDR4 HybriDIMM:

  • Unifies memory and storage into one module (DIMM), breaking the decades-long limitations of the Von Neumann computing architecture
  • Applies the predictive algorithms of the PreSight technology to pre-fetch and stage required data to scale memory to storage capacities
  • Accelerates storage access time to near memory speeds using advanced buffering technology
  • Allows multi-terabytes of persistent memory to run real-time in-memory applications on existing Intel-based servers at speeds an order of magnitude faster than NAND
  • Generation I HybriDIMM: configurable 256-512GB NAND + 8-16GB DRAM per DIMM/1866 MTS 3DPC for Broadwell; Linux support; block storage, app direct mode
  • Generation II HybriDIMM: configurable 1TB NAND + 32GB DRAM per DIMM/2400 MTS 2DPC for Purley; Linux, Windows support; block storage, app direct mode

Dong-su Kim, Ph.D., Vice President, Samsung Ventures America spoke on the company's partnership with Netlist. "At Samsung, we are actively investing in the future. We are pleased to partner with Netlist, a company with a long-history of innovative memory technology solutions and intellectual property, to productize and drive broad market adoption." Samsung and Netlist signed a 5 year joint development agreement in November 2015.
