VIDEO: How Self-Driving Vehicles Stand Apart from AGVs

Self-driving vehicles are a major part of industrial automation, whether it's on the WD rail distribution side, or large scale manufacturing.

In the video above, you’ll see me standing in a place I would never dream of standing in a conventional industrial setting, with self-driving vehicles zooming by and around me without any guarding whatsoever.

In this video, we talk with Bill Torrens, director of sales for OTTO Motors, about the latest in self-driving vehicles and how with Cloud-based technology, a fleet of self-driving vehicles can work both independently and as a team with each other and human workers.

Traditionally when we think of old school AGVs, we think of semi-autonomous devices moving slowly along a predetermined path laid out on a factory floor, requiring significant renovations to implement the system.

Self-driving vehicles like the OTTO 1500 instead operate from a map hosted on a cloud and software platform in combination with live LiDAR technology to catch and react to live changes in their environment, like humans crossing its path or boxes falling in the way.

“Because the OTTO can do a cognitive evaluation of the environment around it as it changes over time, it is able to react to inconsistencies,” said Torrens. “As a result, it can see you up to a thirty meters away and behave differently based upon your trajectory and its potential interference with you.”
