Machine tools come in sizes big and small. We’ve all seen the standard general purpose, job shop, multi-axis machine tool, but in the video above, we were witness to a substantially larger machine.
In this video interview, we talk with Dennis Nichols, senior applications engineer at OKUMA America, about one of the largest machining tools for the automotive and aerospace and heavy equipment industries: the MCR-BIII.
“We call them attachments because this can be changed out to a vertical or horizontal to do five-sided machining,” said Nichols. “The MCR-BIII can be used for automotive, aerospace, large construction equipment and more.”
The MCR-BIII has a ram-type head featuring a 40 hp (30 hp continuous) 4,000 rpm vertical spindle.
“The accuracy and repeatability on this machine is comparable to some of our smaller machines,” Nichols added. “This machine is also capable of probing and can set tools by contact tool setting or by laser tool setting.”
