Engineers Develop Tent / Hammock Hybrid

Kammok is a company full of outdoors enthusiasts who want to find a better way, and aren’t against building the better way on their own. The team is running a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for Sunda, an outdoor two person tent that converts into a hammock.

The unit can act as a ground tent, a hammock-tent, a lightweight hammock, or a lightweight sun shelter. Design inspiration and naming rights come from the Sunda flying lemur for its gliding form and versatility. The peak height is 40 inches but that height is good for the full length of the tent. The floor has 35 square feet of area and two outside ‘vestibules’ both with 6.24 square feet of space for dry outside extra storage space.

Lumos is a light enhancing, heat reflective fabric that Kammok developed for the Sunda tent. The fabric is designed to amplify light inside so that one flashlight can light up the entire tent, and reflect infrared and visible light rays from the outside. Nannoet is the second fabric developed specifically for the tent, woven from 15D low-stretch filament to give maximum airflow while maintaining a light weight and keeping insects out of the tent.

When fully packed the Sunda weighs a little over 4 pounds and packs down to a 7 inch by 19 inch space. The floor dimensions are 50 inches x 100 inches. Three DAC Featherlite NSL poles and six stakes hold the tent in place. When in hammock mode the system can hold up to 400 pounds.

Sunda is a great example of a company that started with one product and carefully innovates into each successive product. The passion for the outdoors along with a need for solid design is evident in their product catalog and this Kickstarter campaign page. The first round of production tents will be funded on November 11, 2016 when the campaign ends and first units are expected to ship in June 2017.
