Simulation Platform Offers New Insight into Electronics Cooling

Overheating can be a dangerous outcome when the electronic components of a device are not designed properly. We have learned this the hard way with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Software engineering company Siemens has recently released the Electronics Cooling Toolset (E-Cool) as part of STAR-CCM+ software version 11.06 (v11.06). The new feature enables thermal performance analysis of board and system-level electronic components. The electronic parts can be imported from industry-standard intermediate data format (IDF) files or created in STAR-CCM+. The parts can range from components such as fans and heatsinks to chips and boards.

"This new capability allows engineers to focus their time on making the right decisions for improving the thermal efficiency of their electronics systems," said Siemens PLM Software Senior VP of Product Management Jean-Claude Ercolanelli. "It utilizes an entirely new concept for quickly managing and exploring their entire product design space to match their industrial engineering objectives."


Other Features of STAR-CCM+ v11.06

The E-Cool toolset is a highlight of the newest version of the simulation software. Advanced insight into the ability of a device to cool itself could mean enormous potential for improving energy efficiency and device durability, not to mention safety. There are several other notable features, however, of STAR-CCM+ v11.06.


Reduced DEM Calculations

For filtration, fluidized beds or biomass furnaces type of applications, v11.06 introduces Source Smoothing. In this feature, the underlying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mesh can be automatically smoothed or coarsened in order to make discrete element method (DEM) calculations more straightforward, effectively reducing computational time.


Accounts for Varying Population of Particles

START-CCM+ v11.06 introduces the Adaptive Multiple Size Group Population Balance (A-MUSIG), which allows users to accurately model flows where the dispersed phase of bubbles, droplets or particles has a varied population in terms of size.


Side-By-Side Design Comparison

The Simulation Tree Comparison feature allows the user to see the simulation setup from two different cases at once. This makes it easier to identify differences or variations from best practices and saves design time.
