Internships are an integral part of an engineer’s education, helping students build their skills and prepare to enter the workforce. For engineers interested in national security, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now accepting applications for its 2017 summer internship program.
The Homeland Security STEM Summer Internship is a 10-week summer program for undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in STEM disciplines with homeland security applications. Operated by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs, these internships provide research experience through placements with federal facilities and labs across the country.
Like many research internships and scholarship programs, the Homeland Security internships aim to build a diverse, educated and highly skilled workforce in the STEM fields. They are also intended to foster relationships between students, researchers, DHS and other government facilities.
Many national labs and research facilities are participating in the program, including:
- U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center
- U.S. Customs and Borders Protection
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
- S&T Office for Interoperability and Compatibility
- Federal Emergency Management Agency
- National Urban Security Technology Laboratory
- Transportation Security Laboratory
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center
- Health Service Corps
- National Security Technologies
- Naval Research Laboratory
- U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories
The program ensures students get hands-on research experience, identification of their career goals and the development of a strong professional network of other engineers, scientists and laboratory facilities. Participating students also receive a stipend of $6,000 for undergraduates and $7,000 for graduate students.
