iLuun is the First USB 3.0 Wireless Flash Drive

The engineering team at iLuun saw that our lives are shifting away from desktops and onto mobile devices. Seeing a need for a device that could act as file storage for mobile devices, they developed the iLuun Air, the first wireless USB 3.0 flash drive. The team is running a successful campaign on Kickstarter for their first run of production parts.

ILuun boasts a wireless network that can connect to up to six devices. The campaign page says that no wires, internet connection, or mobile data is required to pass files back and forth between a mobile device / desktop / laptop and the flash drive. Internet pass thru mode allows the user to use the internet and stay connected to the drive.

Several video (WMV, AVI, MKV, MP4, MOV, FLV, MPG, RMVB, M$V, TS), audio (MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC), graphic (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIF, TIFF) and document (DOC, DOCX, PDF, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, TXT) files are supported by the iLuun Air. The backup aspects of the device are definitely welcome, especially as my phone flashes another message about iCloud being full and the phone not backed up in twenty weeks.

The device is available in 32, 64, 128, or 256 GB sizes, uses USB 3.0 interface technology, and 802.11 B/G/N 2.3 Gigahertz wifi connection. iOS 8.0 and up, Android 4.3 and up, Windows and Mac platforms are all supported. The device is the size of a standard flash drive, 19.05 x 77.47 x 11.43 millimeters and weights 22 grams. Ninety minutes of charge time for the 400 milliAmp hour lithium polymer battery will give the user 5 hours of streaming or one week of power on standby. Recommended operating temperatures are 0 – 45 degrees Celsius and -20 – 60 degrees Celsius for storage.

Although a similar device was launched in the past, iLuun discusses the differences built into their product in the Comments section. It’s difficult to say whether one innovation can revolutionize data storage and transfer but this looks to have great ideas and a raw demonstration video posted on YouTube shows great streaming video from the app. I’m also a huge fan of developmental prototype photos and this page has several. The page shows how much more polished and professional a crowdfunding campaign looks when a marketing firm manages the content. First units are expected to ship in March 2017.
