VIDEO: Plasma Cutting and Gouging with a Single System

In metalworking, plasma cutting is a high efficiency, low cost way to cut heavy plate, but it’s not a task for the junior on the shop floor.

An operator must have an intimate understanding of his machine settings to get a fast cut of sufficient quality, before moving on to welding without extensive dressing of the cut. But what if there was a way to simplify the process?

In the video above, we learn how modern equipment reduces the requirements for technical expertise while still achieving quality cuts, with Dominique Paradis, district sales manager at Hypertherm.

“We have designed equipment we call Smart Sense technology, which will automatically adjust the pressure for cutting and gauging,” said Paradis. “This is why we’ve created different types of torches to adapt to different processes.”

Hypertherm’s Powermax105 plasma metal cutting and gouging system, shown in the video above, can operate with a 75° hand torch for cutting, as well as a 15° torch better suited for gouging.

The torches can be easily disconnected and reattached for a fast changeover. Once a switch has been made, the system should be reset to configure to the new setting, which only takes a few seconds. In total, there are seven Duramax torch styles for hand cutting, portable automation, X-Y table cutting and robotic cutting and gouging applications.

The Powermax65 system can deliver cuts on 32mm (1-1/4”) thick metals and is suitable for lightweight and conductive materials as well as structural steel and heavy fabrication applications.

“Hypertherm has also developed shielding technology, which lets you touch the surface of our consumables when you cut, allowing you to use a steel jig or plate to drag the surface and guide yourself, so it’s a lot easier for someone who has never used plasma before to be good at it,” said Paradis. “With all of the parameters and Smart Sense technology, the operator doesn’t need to do anything but put the right consumable on, select the amperage, the process and do the job.”
