Multibody Dynamics Solution to Deliver Real Time Analysis

Simulation software company MSC Software Corporation has announced an expansion of its multibody dynamics simulation solution, Adams Real Time. Scheduled for release in April, MSC Adams Real Time will deliver real time analysis capabilities.

Adams has helped engineers study the dynamics of moving parts and how loads and forces are distributed throughout mechanical systems. In doing so, it has improved engineering efficiency and reduced product development costs by enabling early system-level design validation. Now with Adams Real Time, there will be additional product capabilities. Its biggest update is allowing users to remain within one modeling environment for their simulations.

“The primary value proposition of Adams Real Time is the ability to stay in one modeling environment and transition from high-fidelity off-line models to Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), and then real time versions of those same models that can be used for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), driving simulators, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), etc.,” said Peter Dodd, vice president for System Dynamics at MSC Software. “Our customers, who have long trusted the accuracy and reliability of Adams for their predictions, have asked us to provide this same certainty for real time studies. This one tool, one model approach reduces the number of software products in play and increases process confidence by eliminating time-consuming and error-prone model translations between different tools.”

One highlight of the Adams Real Time release is the ability to perform real time analysis on the Concurrent Platform. Adams Real Time will allow users to run their analysis in the Concurrent’s SIMulation Workbench (SimWB) real time modeling environment, and on the RedHawk Linux operating system. The Adams Solver can participate in co-simulations performed in the SimWB real time environment. Through this, Adams Real Time will allow users to integrate their Adams model with their hardware controller or driving simulator—an asset to those performing automobile simulations.

Another aspect of the release is the addition of a new fixed-step integrator for the Adams Solver. This will help ensure that a fixed amount of work is completed in a given time frame to satisfy the requirements for a Linux real time operating system (RTOS). Other release features include a local tire solver that offers the option to calculate the tire equations internally, as well as a new “Direct” communication option for FMI-based co-simulation. This option will work to improve the communication performance between the FMU master and slave during co-simulation.
