Internet of Things (IoT) insight services firm MachNation has released the 2017 IoT Device Management ScoreCard, a report that takes an in-depth look at 18 different IoT platform vendors and scores them across several categories. The ScoreCard also offers insight into the business of IoT device management, concluding that revenue from this sector will increase from $2 billion USD in 2016 to $83.4 billion by 2025.

"In order to capture the key trends in the [IoT device management] ecosystem, we completed an in-depth analysis of the following vendors: ARM, Amazon, Axonize, Bosch, Cloud of Things, Cumulocity / Software AG, DevicePilot, Friendly Technologies, Huawei, Microsoft, Particle, PTC, Relayr / Proximetry, Sierra Wireless, SiteWhere, Telit, Thingsboard and Wind River," said MachNation analyst Sam Hale.

These 18 vendors and their respective IoT device management platforms were evaluated across four main categories: integration, lifecycle management, architecture and security, and business and strategy. These were then divided into a total of 18 sub-categories for scoring purposes.

So who came out on top? You’ll have to request access to the full report for that information, but MachNation has released an executive summary that gives a broad overview of different platform classifications. This overview categorizes the vendors into eight “buckets” based on their platform’s capabilities versus both ease of deployment and business suitability.

"The IoT device management space is quite complex and until now has been less deeply understood than other technology sectors in IoT," said Hale. "Our recommendations are based on extensive developer documentation review, hands-on product testing and countless live demos of IoT device management platforms."

The release of the ScoreCard coincides with MachNation’s new IoT Device Management research program, aimed at helping enterprises deploy and manage IoT devices.
