Internet of Things (IoT) company Telit has partnered with digital security firm OT-Morpho to create solutions for the emerging IoT cellular economy. The collaboration aims to develop a new approach to IoT deployment that will allow for on-demand, digital distribution of mobile subscriptions for IoT nodes.
Although the companies have not yet revealed any details of their plan, the solution will be targeted toward the next generation of IoT devices, employing standards such as NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and Cat-M, both Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) standards that connect devices over cellular bands.
“…This new solution will further target the coming wave of NB-IoT and Low Cat devices to enable a global IoT-centric subscription management service, reduce total cost of ownership for end customers, and improve time to market for IoT developers," explained Telit CEO Oozi Cats.
LPWAN technology is growing in popularity along with the IoT, and bringing with it a renewed battleground of competing standards. Some LPWAN standards, like NB-IoT and Cat-M, make use of cellular frequencies, while others, like LoRa and Sigfox, utilize unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) bands. This rich variety of competing LPWAN standards may prove to impede the growth of the IoT, even as it seeks to advance the technology.
In spite of this, it’s worth keeping in mind what the future of IoT connectivity and deployment might look like. The collaboration between Telit and OT-Morpho envisions the widespread use of cellular LPWAN technology, and if the companies manage to come up with a highly scalable, cellular IoT deployment solution, they may even help shape this vision.
