Smart buildings, that is, buildings equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and solutions, are only as smart as the data they produce. At the end of the day, you need ways to analyze and visualize that data in order to discover actionable, profitable insights from it.

A recent partnership between software companies Altair and CANDI Controls aims to deliver these insights by integrating Altair’s Carriots Analytics platform with CANDI’s PowerTools IoT gateway software. In the combined solution, PowerTools takes care of the smart building networking, while Carriots Analytics provides the data analytics and visualization tools. Together, they offer a business intelligence platform for smart buildings.

“Data analysis is essential to facilities, energy and sustainability managers who are responsible for multiple buildings,” said CANDI CEO Steve Raschke. “They interact with large amounts of data and need to quickly derive strategic insights from a holistic view of their portfolio. Our alliance with Altair and integration of Carriots Analytics with CANDI PowerTools empowers those professionals with the ability to transform data into actionable knowledge. This is how smart buildings work.”

Users will be able to aggregate both live and historical data from numerous smart building sources, like heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); lighting; air quality; and energy use. This data can then be combined with additional data, such as financial or maintenance information, to gain holistic insights. With Carriots Analytics, these insights can be quickly accessed, and with PowerTools, new IoT data sources can be quickly deployed.

“Altair is very excited to collaborate with CANDI to offer a comprehensive business intelligence platform for smart buildings,” said Altair’s Joe Sorovetz. “Carriots Analytics will not only let building operators collect and analyze building data, it also allows them to quickly derive valuable and actionable insight to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs.”
