For those just getting started in Internet of Things (IoT) development, there can be a lot to learn. Even seasoned IoT engineers need to update their knowledge every once in a while to stay on top of this rapidly growing technology. The good news is that everything you need to know is available online—but where do you start? How do you figure out what you even need to learn?
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) provide a great answer to these questions, and fortunately there are plenty of MOOCs available to help you learn about the IoT. For example, PTC, makers of the ThingWorx IoT platform, recently entered the IoT MOOC arena with the launch of IoT University (IoTU). IoTU is an online learning platform dedicated to helping IoT engineers of all levels further their knowledge.
Along with a variety of IoT courses, IoTU offers one-on-one mentoring with industry experts and a community forum to connect with virtual classmates. Courses are comprised of videos, exercises and projects designed to keep students interested and engaged. One of the biggest advantages of MOOCs is their ability to move away from the traditional lecture-only format, which is the educational equivalent of bloodletting.
Naturally, the IoTU development courses are centered around the ThingWorx IoT platform, such as the beginner-oriented “Fundamentals of IoT Development with ThingWorx.” However, not all courses focus on development—for example, “New Business Markets in the Internet of Things” gives an overview of the changing industry landscape.
