Simcenter 3D Focuses on Generative Design and Streamlining Workflows

Siemens PLM recently announced the latest version of Simcenter 3D, its computer-aided engineering (CAE) flagship.

To those not in the know, Simcenter 3D is a stand-alone CAE platform. The software works with various CAD data and brings all of Siemens PLM simulation technology under one roof. In other words, the software is built from the Siemens NX Platform and therefore can be integrated with NX CAD and other Siemens PLM tools.

The current release of Simcenter 3D has a heavy focus on topology optimization and convergent modeling. The aim is to provide engineers a generative design workflow.

For instance, the topology optimization results created in Simcenter 3D can be brought back into the CAD design workflow without the need to convert or trace over the geometry. This also works for 3D scanned data for those looking to reverse engineer an optimized design. Even more interesting is that engineers can link the design space exploration functionality of HEEDS with the generative design tool to better explore a part’s performance options.

Another addition to Simcenter 3D is its expended support for general purpose nonlinear simulations using NX Nastran. Siemens PLM reports that the nonlinear capabilities of Simcenter 3D has expanded well beyond thermo-mechanical behaviors. Additionally, engineers will be able to use more elements, algorithms and multi-steps in their nonlinear simulations.

Engineers also will notice added functionality when performing simulations with composites using LMS Samtech Samcef. For instance, you can now assess the residual stresses and spring-back effects of a cured composite.

The latest release of Simcenter has some workflow improvements such as the modeling of connections in large assemblies or the simulation of malleable pipes and hoses. Using universal connections, engineers can build large systems models that can be computed by various solvers.

“The latest release of Simcenter 3D delivers innovative capabilities for topology optimization applied in the context of generative design and brings together unique hybrid test/analysis technologies that extend the ability to model and simulate system dynamics for complex applications such as high frequency noise and vibration,” said Donald Tolle, practice director of Simulation-Driven Systems Development at CIMdata.

Other enhancements to Simcenter 3D include:

  • Modeling sub-mechanisms within motion assemblies
  • Faster solutions times when modeling analytical contact in motion simulations
  • Improved accuracy of interior and exterior acoustic simulations
  • Import of test-based data into models to improve accuracy
