Telecommunication giants AT&T and Nokia have announced a partnership to deliver a globally interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) experience. This will be created through Nokia’s Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING), providing AT&T customers with access to Nokia’s global IoT network and its associated assets. The companies will become key players as the global 5G network develops through their influence across IoT-prevalent industries like transportation, health, manufacturing, agriculture, utilities and more.
The Nokia WING is an IoT-connectivity-enabling service that caters to communication service providers (CSPs) and enterprise companies, helping them develop their IoT applications and bring them to market through its worldwide network grid.
Chris Penrose, president of Internet of Things Solutions at AT&T, said, “Our work with Nokia WING will help clear away the complexity of large-scale IoT adoption so that our customers can unlock the potential of IoT worldwide. Boosted by Nokia’s globally deployed ‘one-stop shop’ network technology, we can be more nimble and responsive to our customers’ needs.”
AT&T’s cloud-based platform Multi-Network Connect will assist firms in connecting to and managing Nokia’s WING in IoT applications running within different networks, operators and locations—all on a single dashboard.
The partnership aims to boost IoT performance, lower latency, and achieve 5G network slicing—subdividing a network into multiple networks—while still adhering to local regulations for IoT devices.

Deployment is expected to begin in late 2018. By 2020, the companies aim to roll out this joint service to over 20 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, South America and the Middle East.
