Browser-Based Fire and Smoke Simulation

Cloud-based simulation provider SimScale announced an explorative preview program for Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in partnership with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, FDS is a large-eddy simulation solver aimed at practical problems in fire protection engineering.

According to SimScale, many customers in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries have requested a cloud-based simulation solution for the mature and reliable FDS solver. As the FDS code is completely open-source, SimScale is free to develop its own cloud wrapper on the solver—and they’re looking for feedback.

SimScale is asking interested companies to join the FDS preview program to help explore and validate the workflow-driven interface. SimScale’s offering is targeted to the modeling and visualization of complex fire scenarios in buildings, especially parking garages and tunnels.

“SimScale’s CFD capabilities that are in production today, along with its seamless deployment, collaboration functionality and scalability, have made it the tool of choice for many AEC companies,” said SimScale CEO David Heiny. “SimScale already helps these companies—including ARUP, WSP and Aqseptence Group, among others—tackle engineering projects in the space of thermal comfort, industrial ventilation, building wind loads and pedestrian comfort. The request from these customers to extend SimScale’s feature set to also cover fire and smoke scenarios seems like a natural next step for our development.”
