What’s In the BOXX: First Look at the GoBOXX SLM Series

For 21 years, BOXX has been producing high-performance workstations and rendering systems for VFX studios, engineering firms and a multitude of design organizations. After the success of the APEXX S3, the company recently decided to unveil a new mobile workstation series called the GoBOXX SLM Series. The new series features two laptops that, according to BOXX, aim at delivering high-quality performance for professionals who are always on-the-go.

The SLM Series features two laptops: the GoBOXX SLM and the GoBOXX SLM VR. Weighing only 3.96 pounds and with a thickness of .69 inches, the GoBOXX SLM Series is the lightest and thinnest laptop offered by BOXX thus far. Each device is equipped with the latest Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA Quadro graphics card. Its 15-inch, full-HD (1920x1080) LED display is perfect for creating your next project, giving you a better design experience.

Aside from these, BOXX intended for the SLM laptops to be capable of running sophisticated software. The SLM Series was built to run eight of the most widely used professional applications such as AutoCAD, Revit and 3DS Max.

Although the company decided for both units to have similar components, each was created for its own distinct purposes, keeping in mind the design experience that professionals wanted to have while working.

GoBOXX SLM

The GoBOXX SLM boasts of the NVIDIA Quadro P2000 graphics card, which combines the “latest GPU architecture and display technologies” to deliver the performance and capabilities required by today’s demanding professional applications.” This means that it can run up to 4 5k displays, allowing designers and creators to work in stunning detail.

It also has 32GB of memory and can run on either Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro or Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit Pro Workstation. Coupled with the Intel Core i7 processor, your applications are guaranteed to run smoothly, even while you’re on-the-go.

The unit has a built-in SD XC/HC memory reader, Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 ports, and two M.2 PCI-e SSD slots for quick file transfers and extensions. Users also have the option to include an external USB floppy drive and an external DVD/RW USB drive.

The three-cell, 57Wh lithium-ion battery is sure to keep applications up and running through an extended period of time, allowing you to get more work done. It also comes with a full-range 150W AC adapter, so you don’t have to worry about waiting for your device to charge.

BOXX offers different hard drive options, ranging between a 2TB 2.5-inch 5400RPM HDD and a 512GB M.2 PCI-E SSD for the GoBOXX SLM. Prices start at $3,497.

GoBOXX SLM VR

Similar to its sister, the GoBOXX SLM, the GoBOXX SLM VR also has 32GB of memory and can run on Microsoft Windows 10. It has a similar unit with a built-in memory reader, a three-cell, 57Wh lithium-ion battery and hard drive options.

Powered by the Intel Core i7 processor, it is guaranteed to give superior performance. However, that’s not what makes this version impressive.

The GoBOXX SLM VR is NVIDIA VR Ready, allowing users to immerse in virtual reality. For that to happen, high-performance graphics cards are used to ensure a smooth experience.

The GoBOXX SLM VR can be equipped with either the NVIDIA Quadro P3200 or P4200 graphics. Obviously, prices can range according to which graphics card you prefer. Both cards are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications. The P4200, however, has proven to be faster compared to the P3200—but it also consumes the most power, making it more suitable for larger laptops.

For a unit with the NVIDIA Quadro P3200, prices start at $3,879. For a unit with the NVIDIA Quadro P4200, prices start at $4,872.
