High Hopes for Bombardier's Global 7500 Business Jet in 2019

At the end of 2018, Bombardier announced the delivery of its new Global 7500 business jet to its first customer.

The executive aircraft, which has a price tag of almost $73 million, can fly nonstop from San Francisco to Singapore with a range of approximately 8,860 miles. The plane can fit up to 19 passengers, but its top range of 7700 nautical miles was calculated for eight passengers and a crew of four, which is how Bombardier expects it will usually be used.

Aimed at high-powered executives and charter companies, the jet’s bespoke interior features a full-size kitchen and four living spaces. Behind the main cabin is a sofa and a television screen, and the bedroom includes a double bed. The master bath has marble floors and a shower stall with a capacity of 40 minutes of hot running water.

While the design incorporates real wood and marble, they're only a fraction of an inch thick to reduce weight.

“This is really the ultimate no compromise aircraft,” said Mark Masluch, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at Bombardier Business Aircraft. “You basically have a replica of what would be a very decently sized New York studio apartment.”

The aircraft was originally supposed to be unveiled in 2016, but Bombardier pushed the launch date back by two years, citing challenges with the plane’s development that required a wing redesign. The plane was granted a flight certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration in October 2018.

Bombardier hopes the Global 7500 will bring in a minimum of $2.5 billion in annual sales by 2020. The company is planning on shipping 15 - 20 of the planes next year, with deliveries increasing to as many as 40 in 2020. The company will need the income, since it has significant debt and bond maturity pressures.

So far, the outlook is promising. “We’re sold out. If you want to buy one, you will get one in 2022,” Masluch said.
