NanoLock Security and Cypress Semiconductor Corp. have recently announced their joint effort in developing solutions to the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
According to the two companies, the implementation of NanoLock's security onto Cypress' Semper NOR Flash devices will focus on protecting the devices from malicious attacks, such as overwriting, manipulation and ransomware attacks. They hope that the combination of their technologies can establish secured channels between the flash device and the cloud.
“With the autonomous and connected revolution underway in the automotive and industrial markets, vehicles and equipment contain more sophisticated electronic devices that require security and management of the software running on those devices,” said Sandeep Krishnegowda, director of marketing and applications in the Flash Business unit at Cypress.
It makes sense to prioritize security and management of IoT devices, especially with the strides toward autonomous vehicles expected to be made going into the 2020s. Even with public-key infrastructure encrypting vehicle-to-vehicle communications, ensuring those systems aren't vulnerable to ransomware is critical.
Krishnegowda elaborated: “Adding NanoLock’s security and management technology to our Semper devices enables Cypress to provide the required level of protection for our automotive and industrial customers whose end-users’ safety relies on fail-safe storage and security.”
Autonomous vehicles aren’t alone in needing better security for flash-to-cloud transmissions.
Businesses with manufacturing floors where Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is optimizing production and assuring quality require the ability to securely manage the software on such devices. Unwanted attacks like modifications or erasures of firmware, boot images and system parameters cannot be tolerated.
Yoni Kahana, vice-president of customers at NanoLock, explained, claiming that the combination of technologies will tackle the vulnerabilities of industrial control systems.
“Our joint solution presents a flash-to-cloud approach,” said Kahana, “by ensuring that devices are protected and managed during the whole device lifecycle, from manufacturing and operations to updates and through end of life, from the flash layer to the cloud controlling these devices.”
