Swedish Engineers Develop 50 Kilometer / Hour Electric Skateboard

Mikael Holmqvist is an engineer and entrepreneur from Stockholm with a passion for skateboarding. Along with his team of engineers and designers Holmqvist has developed the Mooserboard, and electric skateboard that is “fast like a Swedish moose.” The boards are designed to be long range and high speed, with a handheld controller. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is currently running for the Mooserboards.

The boards boast high end materials, from the aluminum core 90 millimeter polyurethane tires to the logo etched hub motor plates. The deck is made from six layers of Canadian maple and two layers of bamboo. The Base model boasts a top speed of 45-50 kilometers per hour from two 500 Watt hubmotors and a 5.2 Ampere hour 20 cell lithium ion Samsung 30Q battery pack. Expected range is 15 kilometers with a maximum load of 150 kilograms and a recommended load maxed at 120 kilograms. The board is able to climb hills up to 25 degrees. The footprint is 97 centimeters by 23 centimeters and weighs 8 kilograms. The Pro version has a larger battery pack and an expected 15-20 kilometer range. The Extreme Long Range version has front and back lights, a Bluetooth speaker, a range of 35-50 kilometers, and an extra layer of maple in its deck. The Extreme model weighs 9.5 kilograms. All models come with a handheld controller, charger and skate tool.

Looking beyond the fact that Mooserboards have built a high end electric skateboard, my favorite part of the campaign is the range and speed discussions. First it’s pointed out that range and speed are affected by several factors, including weight of the rider, road conditions and temperature. The test rider weighed around 90 kilograms and reached a top speed of 47-50 kilometers per hour. Frank discussions of testing and expected performance is refreshing to read in a crowdfunding environment that constantly boasts world’s first, best, or fastest devices. I look forward to seeing how this project has progressed in the next few years. The campaign is approaching a successful funding level and will end on July 11, 2019.
