A Rugged Rotational Sensor for Harsh IoT Applications

Sensor provider TE Connectivity (TE) has released a new magnetic encoder IC, the KMA36, which offers high resolution rotational or linear measurement in high temperature environments. TE is positioning the new magnetic sensor, with maintenance-free operation and high bandwidth, as a solution for dynamic Internet of Things (IoT) applications in harsh environments, such as industrial process control, robotics, exoskeletons, and medical device feedback.

The KMA36 has up to 15-bit (0.01 degree) resolution, and provides measurements over temperatures ranging from -13°F to 185°F (-25°C to 85°C) with a large air gap tolerance. The KMA36 includes a reduced power sleep mode over I2C and programmable parameters that provide options for a variety of configurations. Anisotropic Magnetoresistive (AMR) technology in the KMA36 enables contactless 360-degree measurement over an external magnet.
