What's New with Siemens STAR-CCM+?

The Simcenter STAR-CCM+ 2020.2 update focuses on increasing the realism of its simulations and improving the ease of use of the software. To increase the software’s realism, the adaptive mesh refinement, fluid-structure interaction, and heat flow and transfer simulation have been enhanced. The usability of the system has been refined by streamlining the navigation of complex simulations and adding bubble charts to improve data visualization.

The new update extends the capacity of the adaptive mesh refinement to reactive flows. This feature allows for the simulation of combustion, which provides better prediction of flame positioning.

This was ably demonstrated by Siemens’ Vincent Lister, who has a PhD in chemical engineering, to minimize NOx production in gas turbines—as well as release fewer pollutants into the air during his bike rides in and around London.

The simulation of fluid-structure interaction has been enhanced with the ability to include rigid plane obstacles. When combined with hyperelastic materials, this feature allows for better simulation of interaction between rubber seals or gaskets on flat surfaces, which can create high fidelity simulations of flow paths through valves.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+ already streamlined the design of gas turbine engines with its automatic coupled solver control as shown by Siemens’ Chad Custer. The latest update builds on these improvements by adding realistic shroud thermal profiles to turbine blade simulations. This upgrade further enhances the software’s ability to assist in the design and tuning of gas turbine engines.

Creating complex simulations is now easier with the ability to group field functions. The 2020.2 update adds the ability to create custom trees to organize field functions by common attributes. Comments can also be added to the tree, according to product manager Lucie Sanchez, so users can quickly communicate to team members how to navigate the tree.

Beyond the improvements to the simulations, the update also includes bubble plots to assist in identifying data trends. Bubble plots can layer information gathered from multiple simulations in a single chart to quickly illuminate common patterns in the data.

Together, these enhancements increase the fidelity of simulations while streamlining workflow, allowing for more robust and faster simulation.
