Mioty Gateway Is a Flexible and Seamless Solution for IoT Deployments

Startup BehrTech, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, has made waves in the network industry by building wireless connectivity platforms to manage massive scale Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Its aim is to disrupt the market with its next generation wireless connectivity technology. In joint efforts with German WEPTECH, an electric and electronics engineering and manufacturing company with vast experience in the development of high frequency and antenna solutions for varied radio applications, BehrTech has recently launched a low-cost Mioty-leveraged MYTHINGS certified gateway (AVA).

Mioty is a low power wide area network (LPWAN) protocol-based software. At the core of Mioty is the telegram splitting multiple access (TSMA) technology that splits data packets into small subpackets to be transmitted over different frequencies and time. The advantage of this method is that it mitigates interference over the license-free spectrum, which reduces data loss due to collisions and allows data reconstruction at the destination.

“Between legacy proprietary solutions and costly third-party managed networks, there is strong demand for inexpensive, easy-to-deploy and highly flexible IoT connectivity solutions,” said Wolfgang Thieme, BehrTech’s chief technology officer. “Together with WEPTECH, we’re making this powerful new LPWAN technology more accessible, interoperable and consumable for companies worldwide.”

Applying the LPWAN technology to IoT networking enables future scalability though device implementation, management and interoperability; allows deployment on existing systems to reduce high maintenance costs and overcome infrastructure barriers; and offers efficient, reliable and secure wireless connectivity. Regardless of the industry sector, there are some factors to consider before choosing the right LPWAN technology:

  • Scalability: allows capacity for future network expansion and exponential growth of endpoint devices.
  • Battery life: low power consumption helps businesses with their cost-effective operations and sustainability goals.
  • Security: data protection and integrity are crucial to businesses and their customers.
  • Mobility: with more industries applying telematics solutions, data transmission needs to be fast and accurate.
  • Proprietary versus standard: avoids vendor lock-in with standard solutions that ensure interoperability and flexibility in diverse industrial settings.
As the number of IoT devices increases, data traffic also grows in the license-free spectrum, leading to data packet collisions. Telegram splitting technologies, like Mioty, break down these packets into smaller units to reduce interference. (Image courtesy of everythingrf.com.)

The bidirectional IoT-integrated AVA gateway is preconfigured with BehrTech MYTHINGS Central software, which is a unique all-in-one network and device management platform supporting large-scale Mioty LPWAN networks. MYTHINGS Central offers a solution to small scale private networks, managed from the base station; medium-sized deployments, run on a company’s own server; and large-scale cloud-based networks. The software integrates with third-party applications such as Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Cumulocity and enables additional plug-in functionalities like localization.

If a business is in a proof of concept (PoC) phase or requires a more cost-effective solution for its massive digital transformation, it can request to receive a Mioty sample kit from WEPTECH. The AVA gateway is a lightweight device (0.16 kg) that supports two input frequency ranges: 868 MHz (EU) and 915 MHz (U.S.); connection occurs via Ethernet to the company’s local network and uses the bidirectional Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol to forward the data being tested.
