Cloud data management solutions developer Actian announced in July the release of its next-generation Zen V15 embedded database for mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Both developers and end users can expect a myriad of new functionality and features that aim to address the demands of advanced on-premise, cloud, mobile, and IoT applications. The Zen V15’s cloud edge database addresses common issues with ETL—which involves combining data from various data sources—and latency, as well as security risks when decrypting code. Developers can expect improved edge computing and network connection between mobile and IoT devices, cloud platforms, and traditional on-premise databases. This is the third-generation version in Actian’s Zen database portfolio.
The Actian Zen V15 can be easily integrated with various programming languages, including C++, Java and Python. The platform also supports multi-access edge computing and can be used in various modes such as time-series, transactional, and document-centric.
The main update to the software is its overall faster engine, which was achieved through several changes such as increasing transaction log file size and buffer size to reduce disk write loads. Actian’s SQL development team also improved the Zen V15’s performance for SQL queries. It can now deliver up to a 90 percent increase in overall SQL query performance, zero penalty data updates, no change configuration, and extensive support for legacy file formats. Users can now also utilize the auditing and replication functions via SQL within the database at the edge.
“The flexibility to run the same database with local AES 256-bit encryption and underlying file formats at the device, gateway, edge server, and cloud environments provides a way to avoid decrypting until actual operations are performed at the point of action without transformations or added security vulnerabilities,” shared Desmond Tan, senior director of Engineering and Product Management for the Zen database product line at Actian. “We’ve run performance tests for large data writes and reads, a core application scenario between devices at the edge and the network infrastructure against SQLite and MySQL and found that we have higher performance for each individually—as well as together.”
The software provides ANSI-compliant SQL and NoSQL APIs for a single database on an extensive range of data types, deployment targets and projects. According to Actian, this is intended to help streamline operations while reducing potential security risks. In a press release, the company shared that Zen V15 runs in Docker containers with Kubernetes orchestration and Helm chart configuration for deployment.
The Actian Zen database will allow enterprises to utilize 5G wireless broadband for more efficient data processing at the edge and within cloud networks. Edge data management has become more simplified thanks to the software’s capacity to provide both local and distributed data in different applications across enterprise, branch and remote field environments. In addition, the database supports data management from device to device, device to gateway, and device to the cloud. The Zen V15 has already received certification to work with OpenNESS and Smart Edge MEC platforms.
