Real-Time Rendering for Revit

Autodesk’s annual user conference, Autodesk University, is back in the physical world after a two-year pandemic hiatus. Over 9000 attendees have congregated in New Orleans this week, and in that spirit of togetherness, Autodesk announced a strategic collaboration with Epic Games to bring real-time 3D to the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

The first step of the partnership will connect Epic Games’ Twinmotion, a real-time architectural rendering tool, to Autodesk’s BIM platform Revit.

“We’re partnering with Epic Games, the creators of Twinmotion, to develop a deeper connection between Revit and Twinmotion. With this strategic collaboration, Revit subscribers will be able to access Twinmotion via their Autodesk account,” said Autodesk EVP of AEC Design, Amy Bunszel, on the Autodesk University main stage.

Bunszel said Autodesk will make Twinmotion for Revit available for all Revit users in an upcoming release of the software, an announcement which drew a big cheer from the AU crowd.

Autodesk and Epic Games aren’t limiting their collaboration to AEC. The companies say they’re working to make real-time 3D environments more accessible to designers, engineers, and manufacturers across industries. Neither company elaborated on specific plans beyond Twinmotion for Revit, though both Autodesk and Epic Games are members of the Metaverse Standards Forum, which hints at what may come down the line.

“We share a common goal with Autodesk, giving customers more time to be innovative. By tapping into Epic’s ecosystem of real-time 3D tools and libraries, users can spend more time bringing their designs to life and less time handling complex data and technical workflows,” said Marc Petit, Vice President of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine Ecosystem, in a press release.
