MODSIM is an approach to product development that combines the traditionally distinct steps of modeling and simulation into a single process (hence the word). But MODSIM represents more than just a merger of two stages of the product-development process.
Rather, MODSIM creates a streamlined workflow that enables both designer and engineer to remain informed of all progress with a project and collaborate more effectively and efficiently. It also allows designers to experiment with their designs using streamlined simulation tools. So, by the time designs are finalized, they are near-optimal solutions. The result is more innovation leading to more highly optimized products while using fewer physical prototypes along the way, so that products can get to market faster and more affordably.

What does that look like in detail?
To help answer that question and more, Dassault Systèmes will hold its 3rd global virtual 3DEXPERIENCE Modeling & Simulation Conference this fall. The event is split into three distinct sessions for the convenience of regional audiences: one on October 13th at 1 pm CEST for Europe; another the same day at 1 pm EST for the benefit of participants in the Americas; and a third on December 7th at 2:30 pm IST for Asia-Pacific attendees.
The event promises to be a primer for MODSIM newcomers and to build upon the knowledge shared at the 2021 conference.
"MODSIM is a journey for customers and industry," says Berry, who is one the event’s organizers. "At last year's conference, attendees heard from a range of Dassault's customers, including Jaguar Land Rover, Airbus and Novo Nordisk, who spoke about their own transformation goals and aspirations. This year, attendees will hear from additional voices and industries who will talk about MODSIM in action and how it's a key driver to achieving their sustainability, product-development and efficiency targets from a business and competitive perspective.
PepsiCo, Unilever and Renault Group to Share Their MODSIM Experiences
Three presentations promising to drive home the value of MODSIM and illuminate some best practices are keynotes from PepsiCo’s Max Rodriguez, Unilever’s Mel Creasey and Renault Group’s Pascal Remusan.
Rodriguez, Senior Manager of Global Packaging R&D at PepsiCo, will focus on a shift towards sustainable packaging within the company’s diverse portfolio. He will outline how digitally driven innovation is key to getting to market fast and seizing first-mover advantage. Specifically, Rodriguez will explain how the 3DEXPERIENCE platform—which Dassault Systèmes dubs a MODSIM environment—helped him and his colleagues achieve their goals without compromising the products.
Creasey, Packaging Excellence Leader at Unilever, will discuss how his company is designing packaging solutions that minimize waste and maximize supply chain efficiency. By using advanced modeling and simulation tools, Unilever is looking to address these increasingly complex challenges and successfully balance conflicting requirements.
Remusan, Renault Group’s General Manager of Methods & Tools for Numerical Simulations, will outline how his company uses an integrated CAD and CAE workflow to accurately predict the behavior of its vehicles, determine the size of components, shorten design loops and optimize technologies. In the past, the simulation side was perceived as a tool for specialists only. But now, by bringing simulation into the hands of designers, the process works much more smoothly.
